I was just at Home Depot and I saw they had the Ridgid 13" Planer on clearance , marked at $359.00 , reg. price is $399. , if they follow usual Home Depot protocol they'll be marked down even more as time goes on , I have never seen the Ridgid Planers on clearance or marked for less than $399. , its a great planer keep your eyes on them if you are in the market for one

Thanks for the heads up A5. Been mulling one over in my mind. If they get cheap enough, may have to pull the trigger.

My mom is a manager at a local home depot and she says its becuase ridgid has discontinued them. That means blades will probably disappear too, so get them while you can!

To late for me - already bought one and love it. Guess I have to go stock up on some blades when I get a chance.

They just redesigned the 13" planer , it now adjusts from the top and I believe has locking blades now , the Home Depot I saw these in today had both models top adjust and side adjust , I wonder if they are discontinuing them or if its another item Home Depot does not want to carry in house but will order in , like the jointer , drill press , and band saw

Hopefully, they keep making blades for this tool because it would TOTALLY suck for anyone that has one of these to not be able to change the blades on it, rendering the machine a big paperweight. :(

There are a few companies that make replacement blades for all the Ridgid Planer models , Ridgid still makes blades for the 1300 planer that they discontinued years ago so I don't think blades will be a problem

Update , was at Home Depot this morning , the Ridgid 13" planer is now marked down to $259.00 , that's a steel for this planer , if I didn't already have one I'd grab one , they are going to go at that price .

Thanks for the heads-up, Herb. I may be in the position to pick one of these up this week. A planer is definitely first on my list of new tools right now.

Didn't make it out to my HD today -- but the website says they have 3 in stock (still being listed at full price online). Man, some of the reviews are brutal, though...

Still seems like a planer is "better" than planing with a router, no?

Yes , a Planer is better for planing than a router , unless like Shepherd says the Planer is a piece of junk.
The Ridgid 13" Planer is certainly not a piece of junk .

The rigid 13" pointer is probably the best lunch box style planer available.

Rigid brand woodworking tools is discontinued and replaced with Ryobi, which they always were anyway. (Techtonic Industries) From online comments the Rigid planer is not getting favourable reviews.
Even so $259 is a steal and any shortcomings can be overcome somehow. Where there's a will there's a way.
In Canada Rigid can't even be found anymore, not even the shop tools like compressors etc.

I thought Ridgid was Emerson Tools , where did you see or hear that Ridgid Woodworking tools are discontinued ? The feedback here from quite a few builders on the Ridgids going back to the 1300 has been very good , as has my experience with mine .

Emerson does own Ridgid, and Craftsman (for Sears). They are not going to phase out Ridgid as it is a major player on the tool scene and is available at HD (one of the largest tool sellers in the USA). They may be phasing out the planer, like they did the jointer/planer a year or so ago (through in store sales at HD, only). It'll still be available online, though.

Wish I could tell you Herb. The two stores I had time to swing by today, didn't have any.

Oh, well, maybe this is just the fates telling me to be patient for that thickness sander I want. I'll make do with the 12" planer for now.

Ryobi, now that is junk.

Ryobi is one notch above Harbor Freight in my opinion, as it usually doesn't self destruct immediately. It certainly isn't industrial quality or even enthusistic homeowner quality though.

Hmmm, seems I'm talking of Ryobi, not Rigid when I said techtonic industries. My bad.

Rigid is no longer being carried or supported in Canada though. HD carries Ryobi in its place now

No problem , it gets confusing with these tool companies , black & Decker owns so many now I've lost track.
What I think is going on with Home Depot and the bigger Ridgid shop tools is the same as with the Ridgid band saw , drill press , table saw , and jointer , they don't want to stock these large heavy items in the store and have to eat the shipping , they will order them into the store if somebody wants one but I believe the customer pays shipping now to the store. A few years ago I got a brand new in the box Ridgid 6 1/8" Jointer/Planer for $75.00 , clearance down from $469.00 , a few months later I got a Ridgid 10" granite top table saw for under $300.00 , that one was on clearance and I also had a 20% off coupon from Ridgid , thats why I mentioned the Planer in the OP a while back , that's what home Depot does to get rid of items they don't want to carry in store , lower prices until they are gone . Just an FYI to anybody interested , I have the Ridgid Belt Spindle sander (ROSS) , Ridgid 10" Granite top table saw , Ridgid 15" drill press , Ridgid 6 1/8" jointer planer , Ridgid 2.25 hp v.s. router , Ridgid Trim Router (fantastic tool), RIDGID 13" planer , I use them all quite a bit , I also have Grizzly and Jet machines in the shop , I have had nothing but good experience with the Ridgid , they do what they are suppose to do and they do it well IMO

Rick - you can use the Home Despot website to see whats in inventory at your local store and the stores near you. I am pretty sure Athens has a Ridgid planer, just not sure if its the particular model thats on clearance.

Not knowing how many guitars I'll build, I'm trying to justify needing one, haha. I already have a drill press, band saw, router and table, ROSS, etc. Seems like it'd be a good idea to plane with a router until I know how many builds I'll do. I'm really wanting to piece my own blanks together, so I can see where a planer would be a great addition...but they aren't cheap!

Rick - the HD website shows 2 in Loganville #172

1 in Winder # 6979

2 in Monroe #1774

They aren't showing up as clearance though. But sometimes you can haggle a lower price if you say "well my friend Adairondack5 in NY got one for $30 cheaper".

Another thing is that they have a lot more tools than whats on display. Our local HD has 2 or 3 ROSS in stock but they don't have one set up on display.

$399 for a planer of this size and quality is a great price. If you can get it cheaper, then even better. The blades are double edged so you gat a lot of use out of each set and IIRC, the planer comes with a spare set stored under the outfeed table with a wrench and blade tool. I'm still using the original set, on the same edge in mine and I'm 30 guitars down the road. I guess I'll have to flip them over one of these days.

They are double sided and indexed, so you don't have to go through a lot of intense setup to swap blades. I have a two blade ryobi planer that takes the same blades, and I went through the original blades in about 2 years, but I am still on the first side of the Rigid Blades I bought to replace them.
