Go to the music store, and buy the broadest and thickest padded leather strap that they've got.

I've heard that this one from Fender is supposed to be very comfortable, but I have no idea what it's called.

Edit to add: I did some more googling, and it seems what you should be asking the clerk for is a: Fender Deluxe Wide Padded Leather Strap. So there!

(But be warned: It seems to cost between $100 and $200. You probably get what you pay for, though.)

I find one that doesn't slip to be better than a wide padded one
e.g. the Fender cotton webbing strap.

Also try wearing a tee-shirt, less slippage that a regular shirt.

I have tried wearing two straps, one over each shoulder, with the bass, but it looks remarkably silly.

Do not have the guitar slung too low, bring it right up onto your belly, and stand upright.

I recently got one of these for playing my 9 lb. Tele. At $45 it won't break the bank:

So far I'm pretty happy with it. I can play for a couple of hours without my shoulder getting sore.

Having just watched some Iron Maiden live footage, Dave Murray seems to use these... No doubt there's a good reason for that! But the first line of advice is probably the best - a nice, wide strap will distribute the weight better, and a padded one will prevent the strap from digging into your shoulder.

Funnily enough, I spent ages finding a wide, padded strap that slips (deliberately). It has a padded part that stays put and a webbing strap that is attached so that it can slip back and forth over the pad.
I find I can move the guitar around but the wide pad is always in the right place to support the weight - works for me, I bought three of them!

I just went to the store and found a wide, leather strap that I liked (think it was this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/levys-2-1-2-leather-strap). My guitar is a home build that ended up being heavier than a lot of Les Pauls, so I needed something to distribute the weight. That strap seems to do the job alright, there's still a bit of strain after long periods but not nearly as much as with a normal nylon strap.

Suede is good. Wide suede of any kind will shape and conform to your shoulder and keep the guitar from tipping forward and your should stays comfy.

I think suede is softer and easier on the shoulder than rigid leather.

Here's one - linky (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/levys-soft-suede-guitar-strap)

This one is wider and costs less - linky (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/rock-steady-rssl01-suede-with-black-edge-guitar-strap)
