Can anyone recommend me a good funk course?

Hey all -

Just done a really helpful 60 lesson blues course online, and now really want to follow up with a funk one.

Can anyone suggest one they've learnt and had success with.. preferably something that starts fairly basic, but progresses to advanced and includes lots of theory.

I'm only interested in whole courses, rather than random 10 minute videos on youtube, which from my experience, do more harm than good.

thoughts appreciated

TrueFire offers at least a couple of different courses. Of course, they aren't free. But you get tab, video, and practice tracks. I've been pretty satisfied with their product.

1/ How many lessons are there, how long is the course?
2/ Does it cover relevant theory?
3/ Does it get to a fairly advanced level?

Just check out the site. TrueFire.com. Search "funk". Like I said, I've been happy with their product.

But there's no funk courses...?

there's a 50 funk licks you must know...
and another one that says in big letters "this is NOT a "funk" course"

There must be one good funk course? What about DVDs ?

I once borrowed the john scofield dvd but it was too unstructured

Shane Theriot has a good Book/CD slanted towards New Orleans styles. But, it'd be a great start!

I did the eric madis electric blues course on jamplay.

I find jamplay hit and miss, but this was great - it really filled in a lot of gaps for me and gave me a whole bunch of jump off points for further study. For example, been learning more about my II Vs, as a result recently, which was a whole new idea for me.

I can honestly say, it improved my improvising more in 6 months than i'd improved in 10 years. The way it introduced useful theory, licks and mechanics along with just straight up playing and melodic ideas was excellent. If there was a funk equivalent, (the one on jamplay isn't too good sadly) i feel confident my playing would come on in leaps and bounds all over again.

thanks for thoughts everyone.. and sorry for slow replies to other posters,, been on holiday

Allan Slutsky has an older DVD which is ok. Of course his James Brown is good too, has all parts to the songs.

Theoriot is a goody, I just have never really studied through... I certainly will some day!!!

I dig Dave Rubin, so I'd add Birth of the groove too.
