Guitar for under $110?

Hey, everyone.

It's my younger brother's birthday in a few weeks, and by the time his birthday rolls around, I would have $110. His guitar is in bad shape; neck is warped beyond belief. I would like to get him a new guitar, but I only have $110, which is a bit of a problem.

What guitars would you recommend for under $110?

hi DJMonty!
since you're in the UK - and if you don't mind shopping online, I'd say this:

Check out how much it would be for shipping to the UK.
These SX are probably the best for your price range, and also do a good base for modding... this one still has the "proper" headstock.

Fender Squier Bullet Stratocaster. Buy it 'used' and the price should be right. There are plenty of used axes in that range in the U.S., and hopefully in your country, too.

EPI Specials are good bang for the buck as well as the Jr.

the Chord tele's on the bay can (I stress can) be ok for under £90 - you may get a good un, you may get a wrong un

The Epi LP Jr is an amazing guitar for $100.00. Even made overseas, I have no idea how they do that...

Yep. Get him a Jr and you'll still have 30 quid left over!

Bullet Strat, Epi LP Jr. Either one of those is half the price that my first guitar was and a guitar I'd gig with tonight.

And another solid vote for the SX series of guitars.

Bought their LP Jr. model and am jus loving it. $130? Ridiculous that it could be so good.

Good on ya' for wanting to buy your younger brother a guitar for his b-day.

That shows a lot of compassion & generosity from a 16 yr old. I never spent $100 bucks on my brother when I was 16.

Good on you, DJMonty.

Check your local Gumtree as usually you can pick up some decently priced Squiers and Epiphones. I recently bought 2 Squier strats for £30 each. Seen a few Epiphones either SGs or Les Paul specials for around £60 recently as well.

+1 what c. winn said. Good on ya.

Also, another vote for Rondo. Furrians, LP Jrs, whatever. All solid.

If you can find a little more or find a sale, these are amazing.

In that price range if you're going new I'd look towards the less expensive Squiers or the SX line. Both have received some praise as very nice guitars for the price. They are also very easy to upgrade as he gets older and wants a little better sounding or playing guitar. Ideally if you could locate a used Squier Standard for $100 that would be an even better choice IMHO.

FWIW contrary to the opinion of some others I'd steer clear of EPIs in that price range or other off brands where parts to repair or upgrade with may be difficult to ever find.

A used Squier would be the best value for money. I find most bricks and mortar stores have one or two knocking around from trade ins. If you're able to do a basic set up yourself, then that would be a bonus.
