Tele Fever W/Multiplier Effect

Hi all, I’m new here and new to telecasters, I’ve played on and off for 35 years and the closest I came to owning a tele was a mid 80’s Charvel tele but modded out with a floyd rose trem and pre-amped pickups. I had a couple of friends who owned a guitar store in the 80’s and 90’s so I was lucky enough to play with lots of cool gear. I’ve played les pauls from the 50’s, pre CBS strats and teles, 60’s era rickenbackers. I played a les paul copy as a young guitar student then I pretty much only played strat shaped guitars. How I went this long without owning a traditional tele eludes me. ( I think it was the Eddie Van Halen effect).

This is how I got tele fever. a few weeks ago I was watching a Marty Schwartz blues licks DVD and thinking “wow! That tele sounds amazing.” There was a hole in my heart that could only be filled by a telecaster and the search began. My budget was tight so I was going to save up for a scratch and dent sale on an American Special but stumbled on a used MIM 04 tele in midnight wine at a local store. I spoke with the guy on the phone and he rated the guitar an 8.5 out of ten and would let it go for $300 out the door. I was skeptical and in no hurry to run down there until my brother paid the store a visit and called me on his lunch hour to tell the guitar was way nicer than I had thought.

So, I take the ride and play the guitar and I was really impressed with it so I popped on it and immediately took over to my set up guy for a calibration with my favorite strings and a new pearloid pickguard. I’m hooked, I see a butterscotch blonde in my future.

Here’s the multiplier effect. My brother has been hooked on his les paul studio since he got it last summer and is a die hard Gibson fan. He played my tele and thought it played really nice but he didn’t bother to plug it in, the second time he played it I ran it through my blackstar HT20 and he heard how versatile it was and loved the tone. Well, he called me this morning to tell me he had just bought an American Special in three tone sunburst. I guess the fever is highly contagious LOL.

I read this board a lot before I bought my tele and have to say there are a lot of very knowledgeable and nice people here. Thanks.

Thanks for the welcome, I've already recieved some great help on the boards here. My brother ordered his American Special on Monday morning from AMS and it arrived on Wed. night. He told me he loves it, especially the jumbo frets. We're taking it to my setup guy tommorow to throw on some 10's. This will be very interesting to see wether the tele or the les paul is in the stand next to his favorite easy chair from now on.
