So it refers specifically to Van Halen, or to a particular type of amp?

A brown tone, or note, was allegedly a bass tone played so low, that the vibrations would make a person lose control of their bowels, making them crap their pants. However, the Mythbusters debunked it a few years ago as just an urban legend. Really.

Now I'm totally confused.

EVH nicknamed his own tone the brown sound. Everyone trying to emulate it since has picked up on the terminology, from amp makers to 12-year-olds.

I believe that the brown sound means the sound of Fender's brown tolex covered amps. You could google Fender brown tolex amps and see what you come up with. Or go on a site about older Fender amps produced around 1960-63 or so.. The were amps that bridged the tweed and the blackface amps, and they sound different.... a bit rawer sound than the refined sound of the blackface amps... Or even better.... Ask this question on the Amps Central Station sub forum at top of page under "Forum Jump".
