Loose cable jack

I don't even really know what this is called but the cable input jack on my Baja is loose and causing my amp to crackle and pop. Is this something I can just tighten down to fix? If so, how tight? Finger tight or should it be more with a small wrench of some sort?

Thanks for the help

A nut driver is ideal, a socket works fine as long as you don't go after it like you're building a suspension bridge... Good and tight with the nut driver, pretty snug with the socket wrench.

It's important that you don't let the jack twist as you tighten the nut. Many times you can finesse it with your nut driver, sometimes you have to remove the pick guard and hold the jack from behind.

Even if the socket is loose on the mounting cup, it shouldn't cause the crackling. There's no electrical connection between the jack and the cup.

Since you have to work on it anyway, it's a good idea to pull the jack out and bend the spring tab a little bit so it makes a more solid connection. You can also inspect it to see if it's corroded, which would also cause crackling.

I had a similar problem last year with a brand new Custom Shop Tele and got some really useful information from posts here at TDPRI. (...the link to that thread is below...) I ultimately got it fixed by a Fender authorized technician...I have no skill with tools at all...good luck.

Thanks guys. The whole thing is wobbling around now that I've looked at it closer. I finger tightened it but the whole cup/socket/pocket chrome thing is a little loose. I will take it in to GC here in Killeen and see if their man can fix it. I have no tools and even less skill with them so better safe than sorry.
