Soldering pickup grounds

OK it's time to wire up my Chinese/Japanese tele partscaster. The wiring diagram for the control plate I bought says to solder the bridge plate ground and pickup grounds to the tone pot --

In fact the bridge plate ground came already soldered to the tone pot.

Every other wiring diagram I've seen shows all the grounds soldered to the volume pot.

So, does it matter which pot the grounds are soldered to? And if the pup grounds must be soldered to the volume pot, should I also switch the bridge plate ground to the volume pot too?

In that diagram, the path from the case of the tone pot to ground goes through the control plate to the case of the volume pot. Technically, it'll work. But if a pot works itself loose or gets corrosion at the contact point, the ground will fail. Both of these things have been known to happen on occasion, though the risk is small.

I've done it this way a few times, but I've since decided against that strategy and think it's better to make sure the grounds are all soldered.

Using the back of the volume pot for everything is a good strategy. You could also do it by using the cap to bridge between the volume pot and the tone pot, and then running a jumper from the center lug of the tone pot to the back of the volume pot.

Thanks Koko, I soldered the grounds to the volume pot. Plugged her in and she sounds great -- no hum.
