I not a huge punk fan, but I did go and see Refused a couple of weeks ago in Toronto. First hardcore punk show I've been to. My friend had an extra ticket and asked me to go.

I really liked it and thought the music was fantastic, definitely worth checking out.

I know punk is supposed to be a bunch of crappy musicians, and even crappier music...

I think you got it all wrong. This is very overgeneralized and simplistic.

Yeah, since the beginning there have been punk bands that were hacks slashing out 2-3 chords (all they knew) with someone shouting out snotty lyrics over the top.

But also since the beginning there have been punk bands who were very tight and which contained great players.

Bad Brains, Minutemen, Die Kreuzen, Mission of Burma, Meat Puppets, Beefeater, X and many, many others both from the US and elsewhere had some excellent musicians.

The "two sloppy chords and a screamer" meme that people toss about is for those who never really knew or understood punk but based their opinion of it on a very tiny bit of the music that they just summarily wrote off.

Muddslide
August 4th, 2012, 05:32 AM
Incidentally though, there were also many great punk bands that WERE not much more than two sloppy chords and a screamer.

Most observers place The Clash firmly in the punk camp all the way through their career.

Allow me a quick 2-point analysis of their second album:

1. They had a horn section on one song ("Drug-Stabbing Times").

2. They used Blue Oyster Cult's producer.

CASE CLOSED

The Clash was beyond great. I have pretty much everything they ever did, saw them live, etc., etc. They were a true mainstay group for me as a teenager. But...

They really transcended Punk, using it merely as a springboard to much bigger and better things. For example, I think the 101ers was a vehicle much more true to who Strummer was, musically. Heck, Mick Jones came from a Glam Rock background!

Hey, my 2 cents.

In high school, my buddy Dave's older brother was quite the hip guy, very much into the whole late-'70s/early '80s British stuff. Dave raided his record collection, and I In turn got sucked down THAT particular rabbit hole. Still love that stuff, Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks, Vibrators, etc.

Then came Husker Du's New Day Rising, and my world changed. Still love that one, too.

First thing I ever bought my wife was a Flannery O'Connor collection, first thing she bought me was Social D.'s Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell. In the same way couples have "their song", that's "our" band. Good stuff...

I love punkrock, or at least some forms of it. I'm too young to have been tuned into this stuff when it was new and too old to care about taking sides and engage with the genre police, but I like a lot of it, old and new (ish).

Social Distortion is probably my favorite band (right up there with The Rolling Stones in my own personal ranking), though when I listen to their stuff (esp. from the self titled and heaven and hell period), it really isn't what most would consider 'punk', is it? I mean, they cover Johnny Cash and Kitty Wells! I think Ness himself called 'Ball And Chain' a "traditional country soung", and that's what it sounds like to me - traditional country music played by a gritty, blue collar rock n' roll band.

As for the rest of it, 'Nevermind the Bollocks' was a great rock n' roll album, it's just about perfect to my ears, but again, to me it just sounds like good rock n' roll.

I also really like Green Day - I know they take a lot of flak for some reason. I don't get it, I think they're great and 'Dookie' is right up there with the Pistol's album.

Oh, for the Americans, check out the debut album from 'The Jam' (In The City). It's a great punk(ish) album that's not widely known here.

The best part of punk is there is no rules. You put rules on punk you kill the spirit of the music. Mike Ness embodies the whole punk movement, only in punk can you follow Kitty wells with the Clash, while opening for "X" No other brand of music can you do that. Do you think that Bieber could pull off Clash or Kitty, or do I thin Jason Aldeen could either.

In the late '70s, there was a band from Staten Island called Dirty Looks. NOT the hair band. These guys were on Stiff Records, and their two albums have been reissued. Might be some kind of import. I've seen it on Amazon, so it's not too obscure. Anyway, the debut is GREAT. Total late '70s power-pop/punk/garage goodness. Kind of a Jam/Who/Joe Jackson hybrid with a dash of rockabilly!! All that with a crackling, bone-dry production that'd make Steve Albini proud. Well worth checking out.

Always dug the first Lords Of The New Church album. Catchy, well-written, and well-played.

Pegboy-Strong Reaction. I always thought records like this and the Face To Face albums helped set the stage for Green Day and The Offspring. Strong Reaction has "Superstar", which is a total goosebump tune for me. Always wanted to cover that one. I'll sing it. And get goosebumps.

The Clash were always a punk band - in lyrics and attitude - even if the music drifted elsewhere regularly. They just thought they could do anything and everything. Then they made Sandinista which should have told them they couldn't.

Just get all their albums, guess what Sex Pistols suck,

Hmm, so you don't like them? Their credentials speak for themselves.

They came out with a hate-filled spew of anti-royalism and pseudo-anarchy slap-bang in the middle of QEIIs Silver Jubilee year (which was quite a big thing for 10s of millions of Betty and Phil the Greek's fans UK wide). The national radio broadcaster and independents, reeling in monarchic horror, all refused to play it, and it got almost zero media. Despite that, it made No2 on the national single charts and was heard everywhere.

They appeared live on British TV interview and dropped the F bomb a lot (which, back then, is almost as audacious as... any partial nudity on US TV today), and threatened the show's host with violence.

They defined punk and underlined it with two fingers, and pissed off a lot of people in a very short space of time, leading British MPs and assorted moralists to call them dangerous.

Then Malcolm McLaren really got to sniffing some serious money and it ended badly and quickly...

The Pistols were a fine Rock 'n' Roll band before the media hysteria and it's backlash made playing pretty much impossible. Glen Matlock was a handy songwriter and bass player and Steve Jones was a pretty fine guitar slinger. Add Rotten's wry perception and vitriol and underpinned by Cook's drumming, they could do really it. Have a listen to the Spunk bootleg or the Burton-on-Trent gig.

The moral outrage of the Grundy TV appearance and Glen Matlock leaving effectively finished them and punk in UK. The Pistols became a parody of themselves and punk was subsumed into the corporate media.

Yep. Everyone thinks of sex pistols = sid vicious. By the time he turned up McLaren had already sold them down the river.

I still go to that pub on rare occasions (rare occasions because it's really crappy) and they still have pictures of the stranglers playing that gig on the wall.

Also punk:

I'll probably post most stuff later.

On the Ramones thing, I think maybe it was more accurate to say they tried to separate themselves from the Sex Pistols crowd, as they felt the Pistol's antics hurt everyone from gaining main stream acceptance from the media. They certainly felt it kept them from getting the radio airplay they thought they deserved, according to the documentary End Of The Century.

Sticky carpets?

I wasn't there but saw them up in Stoke and they were brilliant...JJ had great energy on those four strings, real gnarly, snotty in yer face bass!

Every few years, I re-read Legs McNeil & Gillian McCain's "Please Kill Me". If you have even a passing interest in punk, there's the book to read. It's by turns hilarious, disturbing, and thought-provoking, sometimes all at once. It really manages to capture the mindset behind a lot of really great music. A must-read, if you ask me.

Yep, that is a great book. Lot's of interesting situations there.

If you have a couple hours to kill this movie has a lot of interesting situations, too. I saw it for the first time in the 80s on late night cable TV on "Night Flight". It was what inspired me to start playing guitar.

I was a skinny teenager who hated football and Bon Jovi or whatever else all my classmates were doing. My dad played guitar and bass and jammed out some, but it was mostly cowboy stuff, maybe a little CCR sometimes. He gave me a guitar, but I had never been exposed to anything other than mainstream music. I was frustrated because I knew I did not have the skills to be a Hendrix or Page. Shortly after seeing this film I started my first band, played a show at my school, and got cut off by the principal. He was not gonna have THAT kind of music in his school.

I know now that a lot of this movie was acted out, it wasn't actually "live". The scenes were rehearsed, but that doesn't change that it inspired me to pick up the guitar, write songs, and get in bands. Yeah Social Distortion has been a big influence on me. I've seen them about a dozen times over the last 15 or so years, they have been a constant in my life for a long time.

Here is a clip...

Maximum Rock n roll's Book Your Own FU@%in Life helped me and lots of people get around in the 90's. Good times, good bands, good people, at least on a relative ratio,or whatever....one two three four!

I just started reading this last week - really enjoying it. My favorite so far was a bit I was reading last night where the IRS called up the Stooges and said they owed a bunch of money and the response (I think from one of the Asheton's) was "We're just a bunch of drug addicts, we don't know where the ****ing money is" and they never heard from the IRS again.

Yeah, Ron Asheton just about steals every scene he's in. I like that one phase he repeats, "the degradation....." No kidding, Ron, if half that stuff is true!

Love the old school stuff, mainly British. Pistols, Clash, Damned, Buzzcocks, Generation X, 999. Early Exploited and GBH. Late 70s/early 80s American stuff too. Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Social Distortion (still great), Agent Orange.

Not much into the newer stuff. Liked Rancid and early Green Day. Maybe a little Pennywise.
