P90 Thinline hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Had a friend shim up a beautiful old Fender Custom neck I had onto a Xaviere tele, with the p90's. He did a marvelous job, but the pickups hum, and they hum like mad. I can hear foreign countries and dead people when I stand by my amp. I've raised and lowered the pickups, everything superficially possible.

I've read here that it's a thinline thing, that they have more interference. If that's true, is there anything I can do to squelch this, even a little? I like a little single coil hummy hummy, don't misunderstand me. This is wacky.

I'd get new pickups, if that would fix it, but I've read good stuff about these GFS p90's, from guys I respect. Is there some quick fix I can check? Thanks in advance.

Much of the hum has to do with the room you're playing in.

I have played some dive bars where the wiring was so bad, my Tele hummed louder than the band!

Turn left and right slowly and find the position where you get the least hum.

Turn off any lights that are on dimmers.

Do not sit near your computer or it will hum like mad!

Turn off any lights that are on dimmers.

Took me awhile to figure out this is what was causing the hum from my Telecasters. The dimmer switch might even be on a light in another room of your house.

FWIW, I have a Modern Player Thinline with P90's and they seem very quiet to me. Why would a thinline be more susceptible to hum than other guitars?

I have other p90 guitars, and there's no where NEAR this much noise. Boyd- I read that there's more noise with f-hole teles...I dunno, it's a real bummer!

The F-hole has NOTHING to do with it. Look elsewhere. Whoever is spreading that nonsense has their head up their backside.

What? Are you sure the hum doesn't sneak in through the f-hole?

There was probably confusion with bass feedback and noise on a Thinline. That's how rumors get started. All semi's are more susceptible to feedback. You can get some reduction in dimmer noise by taping a flat piece of an Aluminum frozen entree tray on the back of the pickups. In that thickness, you shouldn't notice the difference in tone, just a slight softening.

A couple coats of shielding paint plus aluminum tape on the back of the pickguard would probably make an amazing difference.
