Replacement P'up for Squire Series

I recently (hopefully smartly) traded for a mid-'90s MIM "Squire Series", one of the type with American neck and body, but lesser quality hardware and electronics. It's off-white with a replacement black 3-ply pickguard. It's light and plays really well, even with the top loading bridge. I've got D'Addario .11s on it and am trying to approximate the sound of Lynval Golding of The Specials (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxvHgqRZp3s)back in the late '70s. The sound is decent for sure, but I'm wondering what bridge pickup you all would recommend to get closer to the sound of a '70s Standard.

Thanks!

ps: I'm playing straight through a Roland Jazz Chorus 77. Lynval was using a HH brand 2x12 solid state combo (UK brand)

OK, a more specific question, then: Is there much difference between a MIM Squire bridge pickup and one from a MIM Standard? The Squire one sounds decent, but I could get a Standard one locally for $20 and I wonder if it'd be worth it. Thanks.
