Advice on a non - tele (GASP) purchase [Archive]

I'm thinking of buying a new gtr. to quench my Joe Maphis/Surf craving. I'd also like to use it for a bit of Chet/Travis pickin'. Recently I played and was impressed by the new Squier VM Jazzmaster but I also hear good things about the Hallmark 60's Custom for the Mosrite vibe on a budget. Any thoughts on these two gtrs. or other possible options would be greatly appreciated.
