In the midst of all my madness, I got to see Brandi Carlile at the Wellmont theater last night. I had the tickets for me and my roomie, but once the drama started rolling last week, I was going to just write it off and not go. I knew some other friends who were going sitting in different seats, so they kept saying I still should come. I decided to wing it, and literally as I got home, I made the decision to just go.
This was the first time that I've ever sat at a concert alone. And it rocked. Aside from the fact that I felt the need to reserve my cheering a bit, I was much more in tune with the whole concert.
Brandi and her band, well what could I say. I do believe they are angels of music here on earth. The show started with a rousing "Raise Hell", off her newest CD "Bear Creek". The rest was a mix of stuff from each album. I notice Brandi's "thing" are the songs that start off mellow and quiet, and then explode into pounding kick drum, acoustic strummed chorus. Sure that might get boring after a while, if it wasn't for the intense passion of Brandi's voice that gets you in the gut every time.
She also did one song completely "unplugged", which started from a show in a theater once that had the power go out. They decided to continue and realized it was a great effect, singing and playing your hearts out without amplification. I've seen her do this at each show I've been to and the effect is stunning. Youtube or boots will never give it justice. You simply have to be there. The instruments and vocals without any amplification come across as quiet of course, soft and just as real as you can get.
She did a few covers, Bohemian Rhapsody, which again, seeing it on youtube I wasn't thrilled, but in person it blew me away. She doesn't sing as high as Freddie, so everything seems to be a lower register, but it definitely blew me away. And a Beatles cover , Oh Darling.
I'm so glad that I went.
