I heard an interview with him on Bill Anderson show on XM one day. Very interesting cat. Not a guitar hero of mine, though... JMHO H. Mac July 31st, 2012, 05:55 PM "Lightning fingers" is right - Amazing! And what really gets me is that he makes it look easy. fezz parka July 31st, 2012, 05:59 PM the goofy faces and all-around efforts took look as uncool as possible do not do it for me. That's the epitome of being cool. Just being who you are. That's who Roy is. His "efforts" are effortless. WaylonFan76 July 31st, 2012, 06:04 PM That's the epitome of being cool. Buck, Roy, and the Hee Haw girls were a young boys dream. E5RSY July 31st, 2012, 06:38 PM If being a goofy looking overweight dude is cool, then he's right on the money... So, there's hope for me, yet??? Hiker July 31st, 2012, 06:46 PM Great video! Here's the thing, those were different times, it was a combination of talent, comedy, and musical performance. If you're trying to relate that video to current times, or thought, you're missing the point. gitold July 31st, 2012, 07:24 PM This video made me realize that the Fender Jazzmaster body style is my absolute favorite. Brian blaut July 31st, 2012, 07:33 PM Thanks for posting that. I loves me some Roy. I haven't seen that clip. Roy is an amazing player and an great entertainer on top of it! Love his sense of humor. Now I'm thirsty for some lemonade. Hiker July 31st, 2012, 08:18 PM BMt5AZekfG8&feature=endscreen e-merlin July 31st, 2012, 08:39 PM If you say so... Larry F July 31st, 2012, 10:50 PM I remember in the 60s watching a TV show devoted solely to his playing. It was in black and white, and seemed to be done in a studio, without an audience. He played the Jaguar. I don't remember whether he sang or not. I think he was wearing one of those country-style tuxes with the neckwear kind of like a bow-tie, but flat. Hard to describe. Guys in the mid-60s Fender catalog wore them. I think he played it straight, with no clowning around. His skills were mind-boggling. I wish I could remember the name of the show. It had the feel of a one-off production, with no host or other acts, that I remember. A few years later, he had a hit with Yesterday, When I Was Young, and later he showed up on Hee-Haw. I don't mind the clowning around. Everyone needs a way to put themselves over and develop a career. He didn't seem to be much of an improviser (he might have been brilliant, but I never heard him take solos or anything), and he didn't fit the model of a suave smoothie. So I don't know what else he could have done to make a name for himself. Chet Atkins is about the only other guitarist who didn't sing or improvise, so maybe Roy felt the Chet had the audience for that kind of guitar artistry to be sown up by him. I have always loved the looks of a Byrdland, which seemed kind of like a thinner L-5 with a cutaway. Brad Pittiful July 31st, 2012, 11:22 PM i think benny hill stole some of roys facial expressions csadams5 August 1st, 2012, 03:57 PM I love that clip, Fezz. I really just got into Roy Clark last month. I remember him on Hee Haw growing up and never thought much of him. I ran across that same clip on YouTube and was hooked. What an amazing talent. And being a man of similar build, I find him inspiring. fezz parka August 1st, 2012, 04:44 PM And he can play anything. Multi-intrumentalist. Just a monster talent. voodoostation August 1st, 2012, 05:09 PM Roy was my first musical hero well before I ever thought about playing guitar, age 6 or 7. My dad had a cassette of him, Malaguena and Rocky Top were on there. I wore that album out. I always stop an listen if Roy's playing. Super cool dude. brookdalebill August 1st, 2012, 05:15 PM I'm another big meh to the Royster. Kinda liked his singin' more. Like "Thank God And Greyhound, She's Gone", and "Yesterday, When I Was Young". drf64 August 1st, 2012, 05:18 PM The cat was a boxer too. tholt34 August 2nd, 2012, 12:35 AM I like this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhiKgeJV3k0 elihu August 2nd, 2012, 06:41 AM Roy's an entertainer. Let's see a pic of you; I'm guessing you are not some toned, "hunk". Even if you are, no one now or ever cares. And, let's hear you play. If you can play at 1/10th that level it would astound me. Being "edgy" is a "skill" that every human has. Non-players bashing the greats is a pet peeve of mine, so sorry if I sound irritated. hekawi August 2nd, 2012, 07:46 AM I like this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhiKgeJV3k0 that's the clip i always think of first when his name is brought up. no funny faces, just excellent playing. i'll help with embedding QhiKgeJV3k0 fatcat August 2nd, 2012, 09:18 AM The cat was a boxer too. I could see that.. tele salivas August 3rd, 2012, 05:31 AM Roy Clark is a bad ass, don't anybody even think different. lowatt August 3rd, 2012, 07:05 AM If there's strings on it, he could play it. 0k0uPCTChpg sixtiesreject August 3rd, 2012, 10:47 AM Hello Hello-- Thanks Fezz! Roy Clark is brilliant... always loved watching him . I grew up around the "show-biz" environment so it was normal for people to make goofy faces and pull shapes on t.v. The first thing The Beatles learned when they turned up in Hamburg for a gig was "you better jump around" . twangjeff August 3rd, 2012, 10:58 AM I like Roy Clark, sure he is a ham, but a nice player. I love the album of Hank Williams tunes that he did with Joe Pass. That is always a fun listen. If you can hang with Joe Pass, then you know you have some chops. motwang August 3rd, 2012, 11:30 AM Roy has been a fav of mine for many years since I watched him on Hee Haw as a kid. Buck, Roy, and the Hee Haw girls were a young boys dream. Yeah, buddy!!! Roy Clark, I think, was such a good player that he thought he had to make it look hard (n a comical way). Saw him on TV during a Hee Haw reunion thiing playing Ghost Riders In The Sky with Buck Trent. He can still tear it up. SnidelyWhiplash August 5th, 2012, 02:47 PM I love the fact that Mr. Clark is an " entertainer ". In his day you were expected to play for the people. Why does everyone take the art of makin' music so damned serious, nowadays? backalleyblues August 5th, 2012, 03:19 PM I first really got into Roy when a buddy of mine gave me a tape of Roy playing with Gatemouth Brown, called "Makin Music"... I'm a HUGE fan of Gate, and to hear this supposed Country goofball (at least, that's how I thought of him then) going toe-to-toe with Gate opened my ears, to say the least... even more impressive was how he really could sing the blues, really authentic... the music was just in him, the music industry just wanted to keep him pigeonholed so that everyone could make some coin... shame in a way, Roy is just too good to keep locked up in one genre... Franc Robert Hearing Roy with Gate gave me a new perspective on Roy too-well said Franc Robert. wZatx8sBL8o Clarence was a bad, bad man on guitar. And here's one with Roy doing his shtick... kOBmbSFS9Mk Roy is just as cool in his own way. And it really doesn't matter which one i prefer (GATE!) cause i can't play like either one. I have to play like me using the cards i've been dealt. Because the whole point of playing music is finding out who you are and maximizing that. Brilliant thread, Fezz. E5RSY August 6th, 2012, 02:23 PM Growing up in Houston, of course, every February-March was fatstock show and rodeo time at the Astrodome. One year (1970), the musical act for the day on which we had tickets was Roy and Buck (this was at the height of Hee Haw). One of my earliest memories is of a red-white-and-blue guitar. |
