74 Tele tuners repacked

Checking in to see if others have done similar. I have my 74 Custom tele apart to create templates, and so I also have the tuners off. That lead to opening them up and sure enough the grease had crystalized and was more like hard wax than anything else. The tuners are in four pieces, the main housing, the internal housing, the gear/shaft, the tuner button/wormgear. I cleaned the grease out with a bamboo skewer and then naphtha and q-tip. I also went over the shaft and button on my wire wheel, which burnished then nice and clean. I repacked them using some shimano fishing gear grease ( blue ). I used it sparingly and worked the grease into the gears and added a small dollop to fill the corners near the gear and then closed them up. They are like new again, and turn nicely. I know this a little the cart before the horse but my question is - is that shimano grease ok to use, seems to work quite well and has a consistency similar to loose vaseline.

thanks

Ange

Did the same thing with a set of 42 year old Schaller tuners on a 68 tele.

I shot Jigaloo or white lithium grease or something in there, I forget which.

As long as you don't overdo it and have grease spewing out all over the guitar it should be a big improvement - mine were really getting stiff from gunk plus a couple were a bit chewed-up.

Ok cool. I have done this to several pre 70's guitars and it really does bring them back to life. Even though they seem to be inexpensive machines they do the job and keep going.
