Is there a way to wire a stock MEX Tele to cancel hum in the center position?

Is there a way to wire a stock MEX tele to cancel hum when set to the center position? Would it be as simple as swapping the wires for one or the other pickup so they would be out of phase but hum cancelling?

Thanks in advance for any info

Well, first, they'll sound out-of-phase. While it's an interesting tone, it's not even close to the usual sound. Second, it's pretty hard to get good cancellation from two dissimilar pickups. The coils probably don't have the same number of turns and are separated from each other.

The only way to get close to what you are asking, is to find a reverse-wound, reverse-polarity pickup (either neck or bridge) that has close to the same number of coil turns as the other pickup.

it's a matter of polarity and phase. if the same pole of a magnet or compass is attracted to the top pf both pups, they're the same polarity and can never achieve any humbucking mode (parallel or series). almost all single coil pups can have their polarity flipped by running the pup through a rare earth neodymium magnetic field, as ...

the matter of phasing is *usually* easily remedied with a single coil by reversing the wires (hot and ground) of ONE of the pups ... but be careful as lotsa times fender and others wire one of the pup leads directly to the bridge and/or to the neck pup's metal cover. those grounds need to be removed for flipping the phase, and a new ground wire needs to be created that's isolated from the pup and wired directly to the back of one of the pots.

My '00 MIM Standard was hum-cancelling right out of the box in the middle position -- are you sure there's no hum reduction, or might the pickup hum be masked by (usually higher-pitched, more like a buzz) hum picked up elsewhere in the guitar? You might benefit from some strategically placed and grounded shielding of some sort rather than messing with pickups, especially if you're otherwise happy with the instrument.

This strikes me as odd
