Tribute by G&L guitars

Hi! I was thinking about buying a new guitar. I want a strat or tele but for my price range I really don't like the colours of fender guitars. And I saw a really great looking Tribute by G&L ASAT Special. The dark blue one (I don't know the exact name of it) is so sweet. Then I watched some videos and I think they sound sweet too. But I really don't know much thing about Tribute by G&L. I know that the G&L is one of the companies Leo Fender worked with. Is Tribute something like squier for G&L. Are ASAT and Legacy good guitars?

Do you happen to know where it was made?

I have a G&L Tribute Series ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-Hollow (whew!). It's one of the higher end Tribute models for sure, but the quality is outstanding and easily rivals my MIA Fender Tele. My friend also had a G&L Tribute bass that was excellent, though he wanted a different sound and traded it away. I'd rather compare them with MIJ or MIM Fenders than Squiers, though the latest Squiers have been great as well.

I have a G&L ASAT Classic Tribute. Its my #1. In my opinion it trumps a MIM Fender.

My local G&L dealer told me that Leo had numerous patents after he sold Fender. So in my opinion Music Man and G&L is where he honed his craft.

My 2 cents.

How about the MIJ Tributes?

I just won a 2004 G&L Tribute ASAT Special Premium for a great price.

I wanted something different in a Tele-style guitar, so I did my due diligence and decided on the G&L Tribute Series. Wow! I love my two Fender MIM Standard FSR Tele's, but this ASAT Special is now my new #1. I absolutely LOVE it.

I think what really makes the G&L unique are the Saddle-Lock Bridge and those awesome Fullerton-made MFD pickups. What you get is "a punchier bottom end and a brighter top end, sparkling with harmonics", that sustains forever.

Do yourself a big favor and try one, if you can. If you can't try one, then buy one on-line. I don't think you'd be disappointed.

Good luck!

Oh, G&L stands for "George" (Fullerton) & "Leo" (Fender), who founded the company after Leo sold Fender Musical Instruments. Before he died, Leo claimed that he had done his best work at G&L.

So, you're not buying a no-name mutt when you buy a G&L. You're buying a champion pedigree.

I own a Blueburst ASAT Swamp Ash Special Tribute and it's the best Tele style guitar I've ever owned. Easily hold its own w/MIA Tele Standard and far better than the MIM or Squiers. Mine was MIK, although the Indonesian made ones, I believe, are from the Indo Samick factory, so their QC is probably excellent. The MFD pickups are extremely versatile and give you classic Tele cluck as well as P-90 growl and Jazzmaster surf twang.

Absolutely! +1

Mine was made in Korea, too. For the price point, I think the QC on the Korean Tributes is outstanding.

The Tribute Series guitars are made by Cor-tek, maker of the Cort brand as well as many other major guitar companies.

G&L moved manufacturing from Korea to Indonesia because Cor-tek had a much more modern facility in Indonesia. The rationale was to improve the quality and consistency of the Tribute Series AND because Indonesia has lower import duties, which lowered production costs.

So, I wouldn't say that Indonesian production is necessarily better, but rather, perhaps more consistent and cost effective, while providing a platform for further development of the line.

You betcha. The MFD pickups are really the Tribute ASAT's secret weapon. The harmonics coming out of those MFD's is luscious.
