all,
never been much of a tele guy but finally decided to give it a go and did what I normally don't do - I bought one off ebay, good price, just to give it a try. a case of "resell it for at least the same money if its not my cup of tea".
I had heard a few good things about older japanese fender models, consistent quality, but nothing outstanding.
it certainly looks ****ed up. finish is pretty worn and cracked, lots of dings and dongs. I knew that cause I had seen the pics. no issue. otherwise a very healthy, apparently much played example.
spoke to the previous, according to him the original electronics were inferior and he replaced the whole lot to build a guitar up to his standards. cool guy. PUs are custom shop nocasters apparently.
anyway, it arrived - and it blew me away. what a guitar. what a well crafted, mature, resonant, playable instrument. what a neck!! distinct, asymetric V, quite chunky, but comfortable and effortlessly playable. I certainly didn't expect that. we all know that "USA" or "$" is not necessarily a reliable indicator for an instruments quality (I love my korean lite ash strat to bits), but to get such satisfaction from a guitar that did not cost me and arm or a leg - and I have given more than a set of arms/legs for guitars in the past - is a pleasant surprise.
wow - just wow.
