NPD - Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter --- Please Teach Me How To Operate This Device

I bought a used PH-3, for what I think was a pretty good price.

I tested it, but didn't spend a whole lot of time tweaking knobs.
I figured that this could get any phase sound I would ever want with the huge amount of settings.

But I haven't quite figured it out yet.
I want to get a slow-medium up and down phase (obviously I'm clueless).
The sound I'm going for is based on what I got out of the built in phaser on my Peavey Vypyr. The settings there are
Parameter 1 (Rate): 2-3
Parameter 2 (Depth?): 4.5

Those are my only controls on the amp.

Now with the Resonance and Stage knobs on the Boss, I'm clueless. I think that resonance is something that will stay pretty low. But I don't know what to do with the stage knob.

If anyone could explain what the different settings on the phase knob do and the sound they produce, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

I did the same thing... found one in the used cabinet at the local Sam Ash for $35. I checked it out, it worked, so I bought it. It does not have a permanent home on my pedal board - I only bring it out for specific needs.

For that reason, and the fact that I have no experience with the Peavey unit you're referring to, I don't have a solid answer for you.

I generally get better results with it, with the Stage control set to either 4 or 8. It seems to get more of a vintage sound that way. Also, if you're using a dirt pedal, or even a comp, you might want to experiment with the phaser before/after those pedals. Depending on how dirty your signal is, and where its getting dirty, the phase pedal could sound way different.

Plugging an expression pedal into is fun, but not tremendously useful.

Thanks!

You only paid $35?
I paid $50. Considering it's mint and has no velcro or scratches, I think it's fine.

Right now I my chain is
Korg Pitchblack > PH-3 > DS-1

High distortion.

I'll experiment.

Put the DS-1 in front of the phaser and it's exactly what I want.
Stage set to 8, sounds perfect.

Thanks, Texan!
