personally I love Audioslave way more, something about Tom Morello's playing and Chris Cornell's voice together is great

plus Morello's riffs on their first album (check out set it off, exploder, cochise) are just MASSIVE

I dug on some Soundgarden, a loooong time ago! Badmotorfinger had some cool, sludgy psychedelia on it. Never really got into Audioslave

Soundgarden by far. Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, and Down on the Upside are phenomenal albums. Audioslave had one very good album.

yeah he rips on both RATM and audioslave I love his sound, I wonder how he plays with gain without hum though , I'm having a big problem with distortion pedals and hum

but yeah Badmotorfinger is sludgy and awesome with Kim on guitar and audioslave is more clear and in your face rock

really? I prefer Tom Morello , he has more catchy riffs and a MASSIVE sound, and his weird whammy solos and stuff are just different but Kim is amazing too

This is less of a Ginger or Maryann and more of a Ginger or Mrs. Howell comparison for me.

Soundgarden all the way.

now are we talking guitar playing or just Chris Cornell's voice ?

for the voice I prefer Soundgarden too although the screams he does in Audioslaves first album are insane , I think people here who are more of soundgarden fans or dislike Audioslave based on their radio hits should for sure check out their first self titled album or just check out Set It Off and Cochise

The songs...audioslave always sounded like a big rock and roll band to me. Soundgarden had real depth...they could be pretty, poppy, creepy, or headbangin'.

On 'That Metal Show' they had Tom Morello on and they all had a throwdown for which band was better, RATM or Audioslave. I think Rage one.

I really like "The day I tried to live" by Soundgarden. They just had a really cool feel to their songs.

Soundgarden by a country mile.

Cochise was OK, but it's no Jesus Christ Pose. Or Boot Camp, or Ugly Truth, or Fell on Black Days...etc.

Soundgarden for me. They just had the chemistry as a band. Chris is one of the best voices in Rock music.

What I'm saying is that when Soundgarden first hit the scene, there were a lot of bands that sounded similar ,but Audioslave had a somewhat unique blend of sounds. And don't forget I added (To Me).

I dunno. I just hear a loud, dumb, riff based rock band with Audioslave. Very radio friendly...

Then again, I'll never get the "genius" of tom morello...so he makes a bunch of noises...so do sonic youth, and their music is transcendent at times...

Soundgarden mixed punk with Zep with psychedelia. That's a heady brew

Audioslave sounds like RATM, only with the dude from SG on vox

(And +however many for the name sucking)

No offense, Audioslavers:lol:

I wanted to like Audioslave, but I have to agree with Jazz Tele- it sounds like it was made to sell records and get played on hard rock stations- something isn't there in it.

Soundgarden was one of my favorite bands in the 90's, and I'm still impressed when I go back to their records.

Audioslave, like so many other "super groups" had no chemistry, IMO.

Soundgarden. Sceaming Life EP Ultramega OK and Loud Love were amazing, almost trippy records. They lost that along the way, but Audioslave was never more than the sum of its parts. Soundgarden had a lot of soul early on.

For me, they both have their place, so i can't say that one is better. In either case Chris Cornell has an amazing voice. I got to see him live in a club a couple years back, and his band played stuff from both bands. It was like watching the greatest cover band ever. Ha ha.

RATM + Soundgarden = a different kind of Nickelback

Plus, sure Morello is incredibly inventive but he's got way too much 80's hair-metal in his playing without the dissonance of Kim Thayil (which is really the secret weapon to Soundgarden).

I dunno if I hear hair metal...

Hearing Cornell's bland output since Soundgarden makes you realize how important Thayil was to their sound...

The first Audioslave album is high in the running on my top albums of all time. It's actually the album that got me to start playing guitar (I listened to the verses in 'Last Remaining Light' and wanted to see if I could pull it off... I couldn't). The second album had a few cool tracks (#1 Zero is probably my favorite), but missed the mark for me as a whole... same with the 3rd.

That being said, Soundgarden is the better band to me. It's one of the earliest bands I can remember really liking as a kid. I listen to more of SG's albums more than I've ever listened to AS (and the new-ish 'Live on I-5' album gets a listen almost weekly). The power Cornell had in his voice then was astounding, and Kim Thayil is a beast (not that Morello isn't, but you know what I mean).
