mulic3 July 29th, 2012, 03:19 AM Hi guys,
I've been thinking about replacing the neck humbucker on my blacktop tele. I'm looking for a strat like tone on the neck position. It has to be humbucker sized, because I'm not so keen with replacing pickguards and then finding out the screw holes won't match. Any suggestions? Thanks!

before changing the pickup try to wire it in another way...try to split it or wiring in parallel mode....
if you want to replace it...i've heard a Dimarzio Bluesbucker singing very clear...and splitted is a lot single-coil-like.

I'd like to do so but I can't. I has only two wires. Is there a way to wire the humbucker permanently to parallel even with 2 wires? Thanks.

ACHK...no....sorry...
if you are smart you can open the pickup and find the junction between the two coils and take a wire from it...but is non a super-easy job..
soulman969 July 29th, 2012, 05:24 AM It's really not that hard to find a pickguard that will fit a Blacktop. Look for 8 hole pickguards with a cutout for a Strat neck pick and put that type of pickup in if you want an authentic Strat tone.
Here are some from GFS; http://www.guitarfetish.com/Pickguards_c_9.html
There are other sources as well such as Warmoth;

Their costs will be a bit higher but you can pretty much custom design one anyway you like. These should fit a Blacktop with a Strat pickup in the neck as well.

Thanks. So that will fit me although there's a single coil cavity in the bridge position and in mine there's a humbucker?

So don't change pickguards. Use a humbucker route adapter ring -- on the same GFS page. Or just have a pickguard made. Pickguardian will do one for <$40. Then you can put in any kind of Strat pup that suits your fancy.

Hekim July 29th, 2012, 08:03 AM Strat pickups mount to the pickguard and do not touch the body. The larger humbucker route will just have more space around the single coil. Many strats are routed s/s/h or h/s/h even when using 3 single coil pickups.
Jake_Blues July 29th, 2012, 08:06 AM Barden HB TT. Tapped mode wil give you a SC strat sound and still be noise cancelling.
Chet Johnson July 29th, 2012, 08:34 AM Seymour suncan p-rail is humbucker sized and can be switched between humbucker, p90, and strat aounds from one pickup
nogin007 July 29th, 2012, 09:16 AM Phat Cat pickup?? Humbucker sized single coil.
Wayne Alexander July 29th, 2012, 11:55 AM What Jake Blues said. The Barden Two-Tone is exactly what you're asking for.
JohnnyF August 12th, 2012, 05:07 AM I can't believe what I'm reading here. Duncan P-rails and phat cats are nothing like a strat pickup!
Personally I'd try the warmoth pickguard, but the GFS Humbucker adapter ring should also work. One other possibility is to get another Chinese Telecaster pickguard and enlarge the route to strat dimensions.

schaloux August 12th, 2012, 07:14 AM You could use a regular strat pup with a dummy coil attached to it. Bucky look, single coil sound...
Jakeboy August 12th, 2012, 04:20 PM Pete Biltoft at Vintage Vibe Pickups has a HS90A that is a humbucker sized single oil will alnico rod pickups. I put one in the neck of one of my Hamers cause Pete said it sounded like a "strat on steroids".
He was right. Good prices too.
Teleterr August 12th, 2012, 05:32 PM A HB rout will fit a Tele Bridge p/up without mod. A 5-8 K classic style wind sounds great in the Neck, any are cool in the Bridge. I've got a 2 HB rout Strat w a tapped 5.7, full 8K for the neck and a "Hot for Tele" in the bridge. I'm getting a Tapped version so I can do series. Right now its too muddy, but not by much.A normal HB ring protects them, if you use a surface mount, (I do) or : http://www.guitarfetish.com/Humbucker-Rout-adapter-ring-Fits-Tele-Bridge-Pickup-THREE-COLORS_p_4350.html
Ringo August 12th, 2012, 06:06 PM You can probably find a used Fender Blacktop Strat humbucker on eBay, they do have the 4 conductor leads, with the multi conductor lead you can wire it up for split coil, series etc...
Threre are lots of other full size humbuckers with multi conductor leads too.

Yeah, and because it's Custom Shop you can get it wound however you like, with Alnico 2 or 5 rods. I'm thinking of getting a pair for my Ibanez Talman one of these days.
