So I'm thinking hard about putting a humbucker in the neck spot of my Tele. I'm going to get a Toneshaper so it sees 500k and sounds like it was meant to. I want to match it with either a Blackguard style pickup or maybe a Broadcaster at about 10k.
Now the thing is, I really like a super clear mid scooped type sound in a neck humbucker. I'm looking for that clear, hollow tone so my question is this: Does the tone of a neck humbucker get more hollow the lower you go in output?

No one?

Humbuckers don't have to have 500k pots as a universal rule. If you do get a humbucker with relatively low inductance and without its highend destroyed by things like eddy currents introduced by shorts in the coil, the cover, the core material, the mounting plate (pretty much all directions, like many PAFs), there's no problem getting a fullrange tone out of it. It won't sound like a single. Bill Lawrence L90s can do this easily, particularly the lower inductance models (2H is available). I wouldn't advocate for this setup, but if you're going to try it, it makes sense to use something capable of getting the tone you (seem to) want, although I wouldn't call the tone "hollow". Stay with 250k pots.

I'm not sure what you mean by hollow but had a 1970 Dimarzio PAF at the neck on a vintage tele. Worked really well - was still very bright even with 250k pots - but had a tendency to overpower the bridge p/u.
Was great for jazz, soft-rock, classic-rock & blues. Note that most PAF models will be bass-heavy on the bottom 2 strings but can be rolled off with the amp.
Suggest you might try a Seymour Duncan Jazz for clean clear as a bell sound. I have one on a Les Paul and love it.

I have this also in a Les Paul and I agree that it is clean. It is definitely quieter than the bridge pickup. So much quieter that I plan to replace it. ha ha. Its a great sounding pickup though.

It won't sound clear or mid-scooped compared to the bridge single coil regardless of which one you choose. It'll sound thick and middy, guaranteed.

I have a Lollar El Rayo that's brighter and more mid-scooped than most buckers. Can't say its bright, but definitely not muddy and the split bucker postion is outstanding.
