Hi there, great Forum!
I am a newbie and have a question. I am looking to buy a local Sunburst 1963 Stratocaster. It is a wonderful piece that checks out with my local Luthier, that everything looks correct and undisturbed. It was made in December 1963 and was refinished in 1964 at the Fender Factory in Ventura California. I am trying to value of the instrument. If I were to rate it, I suppose it to be in 8 out of 10 shape, with a black case that appears close to the right era. I have done a search and found very little to help me in past sales. Thanks for helping me out in advance!

george gruhn would be your best bet to give it the proper appraisal

Buyer beware. So many fakes out there, ol' George can't really do a thing unless he's holding it in his grubby hands.

Yes it has a Gruhn's appraisal for 16000.00 but that was a few years ago.

since he has appraised it before that would make it very easy to do again ?

Maybe it would be best to ask how much does the Factory refin de-value the strat in your estimation?

if it was appraised several years ago for 16000 the refinish is probably not a huge deal ??...because it was not even 1 year old when it was refinished.

it may have devalued it some but i doubt alot.

its not like you have a 63 and just now or even 20 years ago got a refin on it. the refinish is still era correct as far as the formula for the paint ect.

im sure mr gruhn knew it was a refin when he appraised it and i am sure he colud tell you exactly what it is worth as a vintage instrument and there would be no guessing by anyone...me especially.

also the guitar is getting ready to turn 50 years old...that also may be a consideration as far as vintage value is concerned.
