Skynyrd LesPaul July 27th, 2012, 04:38 PM Hey Bass Players! Got a question for you. One of my friends was asking me if I knew what model bass the was describing. I'm no Bass player just an Old Guy so I'm supposed to know (Do know quite a bit but not in this area) Anyhoo, here goes:
Four String, Has a headstock like a Flying V, Has a body that is a composite material shaped like an SG, and he seems to think it was made mid/late 80's, possible early 90's, has no idea of the manufactuer.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Can you post up some photos I can show him? He's really hoping to identify it so he can purchase one for his stable. Thanks
kylejf90 July 27th, 2012, 04:51 PM was it a gibson grabber bass? i don't know if they were a composite but they have a V head stock and a double cut body.
Skynyrd LesPaul July 27th, 2012, 05:13 PM Don't have a clue but I'll Google it and send him a photo. Thanks, this is a start.
Paul in Colorado July 27th, 2012, 05:38 PM Sounds like some Aria's or other MIJ basses from the '70's/'80's.
fidopunk July 27th, 2012, 05:42 PM The Grabber/Ripper/G-3's were never made of composite.
gypsymoth July 27th, 2012, 05:53 PM modulus? they did composite necks - one on ebay now that is otherwise different from your description.
Skynyrd LesPaul July 27th, 2012, 06:19 PM just emailed him a photo of the Grabber. That looks like what he tried to draw for me. He could be totally off on the composite part though. Keep em' comin'. The Modulus has the wrong headstock. Thanks anyway!
Skynyrd LesPaul July 27th, 2012, 06:24 PM Just got a reply of: nope, but your on the right track, it had no pick guard and came only in silver....
kylejf90 July 27th, 2012, 06:47 PM was it like the aria bass that cliff burton played? that headstock was Vish.
Skynyrd LesPaul July 27th, 2012, 07:04 PM I really don't know, He is dead certain that it was a composite. Said it was super light and he really enjoyed playing it. Wish I had more. What kind of Aria did Burton play? I'll google that and send it over.
Skynyrd LesPaul July 27th, 2012, 07:11 PM Looked up the Cliff Burton Aria SB-1000 and the newer models. Strike Two for me. Thanks.
rip_topaz July 28th, 2012, 07:55 AM I'm thinking maybe an Ibanez EDA. Headstock is V-ish from a distance.

SamClemons July 28th, 2012, 08:13 AM Headstock like a V would be a Dean
Skynyrd LesPaul July 28th, 2012, 10:58 AM Headstock like a V would be a Dean
Not a headstock with a V in it, but a headstock like on a Flying V. Dean was the first thing I said as well.

I just sent that photo over to Jon and I'll see what he says. Body is made of Luthite, sounds like a composite material to me, I think you're on to something. Keep em' comin'. Really appreciate you guys throwing some makes/models for me to look at, or well, Jon actually.

Said that wasn't it either. Any other suggestions?
Cadfael July 31st, 2012, 12:59 PM Headstock "like a Flying V" sounds like Alembic???
Somerthing between the Excel headstock: http://alembic.com/prod/excel.html
and the Standard Body: http://alembic.com/prod/sigstand.html
Question what is meant with "composite body", but Alembic basses are made of up to 30 pieces of wood only for the body ...
This would also fit to the 1980s ...
Alembic had it's great time (with Entwistle and others) from the mid 70s to the end 80s.
Only the colour doesn't fit - but maybe this was a special edition???
guitarzan13 July 31st, 2012, 01:35 PM Body is made of Luthite: Your friend have a lisp??
psychetelec July 31st, 2012, 04:14 PM 80s Carvins had Flying V headstocks.
fidopunk July 31st, 2012, 06:09 PM 80s Carvins had Flying V headstocks.
Haha, yeah, my '89 Carvin V-440 has a flying v headstock... but the body certainly isn't SG shaped.
What about the aluminum necked Kramer's of the 80's... hear me out. The headstocks aren't flying v shaped... they're just v shaped. The bodies are rock maple though. They weigh a ton. The bodies are a slight bit more SG shaped as opposed to a traditional P body shape.
fenderslaper July 31st, 2012, 06:57 PM Does it look like this?
Skynyrd LesPaul July 31st, 2012, 07:07 PM Your friend have a lisp??
I must be too old, I don't get it. :confused:I mean I get the lisp thing, just don't get how Luthite and Sword Swallowing go together. Must be a bass player thing.

Do you have a model name so I can look it up?
Jadguitar July 31st, 2012, 07:13 PM Kramer made aluminum guitars with a v-is headstock.

Don't know the model number. And yes, that's a guitar... they made bass models as well.

Ha ha ha - My bad, just have a gutter brain I guess. When I think of someone with a lisp I just think of someone being a little light in their loafers!
P.S. I grew up on the other end of Ga in Dalton.

Too funny!! Dalton!! Home of all things carpet!! I used to play at an old plantation looking hotel up on a hill, above the interstate...YEARS ago!
I have lived my entire life here in LaGrange. I love it here!

That was probably The Ramada Inn at the Rocky Face Exit. I haven't been back in a gazillion years but once about 2 yrs ago. Can't remember if it was still there. Amazing how much things change over the years.
