Bentley July 27th, 2012, 12:58 AM First of all, I am wondering what a pine body would even sound like. Second of all, would 1 1/2 inches be thick enough for a body? Thirdly, I saw this http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/339541-well-officer-started-music-master-i-swear.html thread. It gave me the idea of buying two of these http://www.homedepot.ca/product/pine-shop-shelving-1-3-4-inch-12-inch-x-36-inch/963526 and laminating them together, to make a body. What are your thoughts? :?: I think it's a cool, cheap wood
guitarbuilder July 27th, 2012, 05:29 AM I think you should go and search for Arlo West threads and his videos on youtube to find those answers.
funkymann1 July 27th, 2012, 07:40 AM Standard tele body thickness is 1 3/4.....as far as using Pine lots of the builders here do it but I prefer alder or ash on a tele....

I've built guitars that are only 1 1/2" thick without any problems... just check the depth of your switch to be sure.
Those panels would be fine for a cheap body as long as you can cut out a body without having a knot on the edge... cuz it could end up popping out some day. Personally though... I would find a better cheap alternative... like a 2x4 without as many knots.

It's kinda become the new benchmark for multi-piece bodies!
guitarbuilder July 27th, 2012, 08:44 AM And it is still together in many pieces :-).
crazydave911 July 27th, 2012, 10:42 AM The very first Teles were 1.5" thick, laminated pine so nothing wrong with that. Lowe's has those same panels 15" wide, which would give you more room for error (and room to miss the knots)
stng72 July 27th, 2012, 11:09 AM i have made several bodies out of pine and they sound great. In my opinion, If the electronics are good it really does not matter what you make it out of. Now, if it were an acoustic guitar thats a different story.

Bentley July 27th, 2012, 01:02 PM Wow, thanks for all the feedback. the board comes in various sizes, I just found one that would be closest size to the guitar. The boards, in reality, aren't terribly naughty, the picture is kind of deceiving. There is no lowes for like 5 hours from Kelowna, but we have home depot and Rona.
G-log July 27th, 2012, 01:07 PM Check out Windsor plywood in Vernon or Penticton for a better selection of woods before you buy, they may have some nicer stuff, I have used them for many builds.
CarlosN July 27th, 2012, 01:22 PM Second Windsor plywood. They usually have a good selection of wood, and will cut to length so you don't have to buy the whole board. The store in Vancouver usually has exotics as well, zebra wood, etc, and I know the stores on van. Island do too so check them out. I have found the staff to be helpful as well.
Bentley July 27th, 2012, 03:56 PM That's a good idea! I might go see if one of the mills in Kelowna can cut stuff for me. There's two so I think I might get lucky.
Bentley July 27th, 2012, 09:27 PM Wow, I just so happened to e going to penticton today so I checked out Windsor plywood. Apperenty they provide wood for about 20 guitar makers plus violin makers and piano makers. They have nice wood stocked, but you can custom order. I'm releived I have somewhere that I cab get wood!
G-log July 27th, 2012, 11:41 PM Told ya!
Mike Simpson July 28th, 2012, 12:19 AM Pine 1.5" works just fine.
Things to watch:
Control cavity depth.
Drilling the hole for the wires from the bridge pickup to the control cavity.
Neck plate screws need to be 1/4" shorter.
Both of these are 4 pine 2x4's and 1.5" thick.

G-log July 28th, 2012, 01:41 AM This pine guitar is 1.5 in thick, made from an old table recycled from down my lane. You just have to watch how deep you rout the control cavity. You can see the scratches in the finish as pine can be quite soft.

trev333 July 28th, 2012, 02:37 AM This was made out of an Oregon pine rafter from the recycle yard...
5 1/2 x 2 is a better size for a 3 piece body.......
the finished body is about 1 5/8".... nice weight.. 3 3/4 lbs...
