bossking7 July 26th, 2012, 09:27 PM Patrick Carney announced that the band will be realeasing a new album in March 2013. Why so late? Patrick said it's because of all of the gigs they have coming up.
I'm worried because if 'El Camino' was kind of "pop rock" to a degree, what will this album bring? Brothers and El Camino almost seem 'over produced.' Don't get me wrong, both of those albums are great. But what's next? What do you guys think?
tele salivas July 26th, 2012, 09:39 PM A break. They worked their asses off the last 7 years.
JosephB July 26th, 2012, 09:41 PM i've lost hope in the keys. el camino was poor. brothers was good, but it skyrocketed them to a place that i dont like.
unless they go back to a more raw sound and deflate their egos a little bit...
i'm not too interested.
JosephB July 26th, 2012, 09:42 PM and they've been workin their asses of WAY longer than 7 years.
Breen July 26th, 2012, 10:46 PM They have egos? I thought they seem pretty chill.
bigmuff113 July 26th, 2012, 10:49 PM Dan Auerbach is not Jesus, and Patrick Carney is not Clark Kent. But they're pretty chill, and are suing lowes and Pizza hut.
mal paso July 26th, 2012, 10:52 PM I'm sure fans will dig it
Donelson July 26th, 2012, 11:00 PM They're shedding some of that "Nickleback" sound. In secret, of course. How do I know? Guesswork.
Justinvs July 29th, 2012, 10:58 AM I guess I'm in the minority, but I really like El Camino. The guitar still sounds raw and frankly the drum sounds are some of the best I've heard in ages. I like Brothers, but I think this one is better.
Having said that, I only got onto TBK last year, so I'm still working my way through their older stuff.
yark14 July 29th, 2012, 11:08 AM I really liked El Camino, and am looking forward to the next album.
I saw them live a few months ago. Great show.
JosephB July 29th, 2012, 11:18 AM I guess I'm in the minority, but I really like El Camino. The guitar still sounds raw and frankly the drum sounds are some of the best I've heard in ages. I like Brothers, but I think this one is better.
Having said that, I only got onto TBK last year, so I'm still working my way through their older stuff.
if you thought el camino was raw...
wait til you hear thickfreakness, or the big come up.
and yes. they do have egos. when you go from playing little bars to suing pizza hut...it's kind of inevitable.
gypsyseven July 29th, 2012, 11:36 AM Whatever, but i´m pretty sure i ´ll like their next album the same i like any before.
What a great band!
Breen July 29th, 2012, 11:30 PM I spin Thickfreakness all the time. If it was a LP, it would have been worn out.
My brother has Brothers. I don't like it.
El Camino seemed impressive, but I have only heard two or 3 tracks.
I don't know anything about Pizza Hut. Did they serve too hot pizzas to Black Keys hipsters and they got tongue burned because they refused to eat it before it was cool?
Justinvs July 30th, 2012, 10:46 AM if you thought el camino was raw...

Just ordered a copy today.
jkingma July 30th, 2012, 10:51 AM I like all of their stuff. The newer stuff is a lot different from their older stuff, but I like it all... and I'm looking forward to whatever they put out next.
I'll be seeing them in Toronto this coming Saturday BTW.
Fuzzblaster August 2nd, 2012, 12:06 AM I've listened to all their albums many MANY times, and I don't get why people seem to think El Camino is like pop music? All their music is bluesy, and rockin, its all good! Brothers is my favorite album though, just pure magic. Glad to have bands bringing true rock music back!
Davo17 August 2nd, 2012, 12:33 AM I like them quite a bit, just wish some of the more recent stuff didnt sound as alike as it does. Dudes a tele fan, which sounds about right.
DrumBob August 2nd, 2012, 11:23 AM I bought the last three discs, then I bought one of their earlier duo discs, and liked the rawness much more. I know musicians have to grow. They probably found the duo gig a little limited.
waparker4 August 2nd, 2012, 11:30 AM I don't know anything about Pizza Hut. Did they serve too hot pizzas to Black Keys hipsters and they got tongue burned because they refused to eat it before it was cool?
Haha... no these companies ripped off their songs for their commercials.
Dwills94 August 2nd, 2012, 11:47 AM the black keys are more commercial than they used to be nut their commercial sound is still better than most other popular rock bands right now
bossking7 August 2nd, 2012, 12:25 PM Ever since DangerMouse has been producing their albums, its been very overproduced.
bigmuff113 August 2nd, 2012, 12:26 PM Ever since DangerMouse has been producing their albums, its been very overproduced.
They need Butch Vig to produce something
fezz parka August 2nd, 2012, 12:32 PM Am I the only one who isn't worried?
Everyone needs time off. Everyone wants to switch things up from time to time.
storyboards27 August 2nd, 2012, 12:34 PM They need Butch Vig to produce something
That would be awesome. I love the keys. Brothers is a great album and Rubber Factory is their best IMHO. I'll be looking forward to the next album, especially if Danger Mouse doesn't produce it.
eMGee August 2nd, 2012, 12:39 PM They need Butch Vig to produce something
Or Steve Albini
bigmuff113 August 2nd, 2012, 12:39 PM Or Steve Albini
That would be good too. Or J Mascis
Mike Eskimo August 2nd, 2012, 12:55 PM El Camino = "Oh Dan, you just heard T Rex ?"
Still good though.
If I was in their corner I'd tell them to chill for at least a year.
No tours/no discs.
Over-exposure can kill/produce backlash.
At the level they're at now, a savvy PR person or advisor can have as much to do with their continued success as any record or single would.
It's still a business and their business gets bigger every day.
One of the things I admire most about them is their "doing the Moby" - i.e. licensing whatever tune they feel like licensing to whoever is willing to pay.
Younger generation isn't bothered by that - only crusty boomer hippies.
I thought Dylan put the nail in that coffin w/ the Apple ad 20 yrs ago...
bossking7 August 2nd, 2012, 01:33 PM They need Butch Vig to produce something
Yes!
tele salivas August 3rd, 2012, 05:13 AM and they've been workin their asses of WAY longer than 7 years.
Its a lot different when somebody else is cracking the whip. Also accounts for their change in sound some people don't like.
TC III August 3rd, 2012, 11:45 AM For indie rock a legit band. But please stop putting them in the "blues" section. SRV was what you would call progression different than the old school, yet you could hear howling wolf here, albert there, etc. Link me a Black Keys clip, where i'll see elements of the wolf, muddy, buddy, the three kings, robert johnson, etc.
I haven't found it, but a great indie pop rock band. For that though I prefer Jack White, way better indie rock IMO. More vintage feel, recorded on analog, better written songs, better production without making it sound like a bieber mix, and you can tell Jack believes everything he says. Also he knows his rock n roll history, and reveres it.
TinyGomery August 3rd, 2012, 11:52 AM TC III, they're certainly not Dad Blues like SRV, the kind of polished, mostly white, slick aesthetic, which is an interpretation of other appropriations of Chicago and Texas electric blues. The Black Keys draw (drew?) on North Mississippi blues like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, not the slick descendants of Albert King and T-Bone Walker. But it's all blues.
TC III August 3rd, 2012, 12:38 PM Tiny I disagree. Here is why. RL & Junior drew on Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Boy, etc. all these country blues, you can hear those licks in their records. Not in the Black Keys though,if so please link a clip. I dont think you will find one. To be a "blues" artist you have to have elements or licks of the blues at some point in your record.
TC III August 3rd, 2012, 12:40 PM Snd FYI Junior and RL would be more "dad" blues than SRV, as they draw on country blues the oldest form of blues, the one to originate the genre. SRV did not have many country blues elements in his style more urban blues ala chicago, and texas blues styles, not rural southern blues. So something to think about before you use that category.
TinyGomery August 3rd, 2012, 12:50 PM No, Dad Blues is my name for blues my dad (and other baby boomers) listens to, the Eric Clapton/Stevie Ray Vaughan school of blues, boring, full of cliches, where it's not uncommon for the player to wear a duster.
For the Black Keys blues work, see especially their album "Chulahoma (http://mog.com/m/album/22011065?ci=40000)." It's deep blues. The good stuff.
TC III August 3rd, 2012, 01:00 PM I'm 29 I play the blues professionally most of my friends are in their early 20s we all listen to Blues including SRV, are we baby boomers? Wear a duster? As opposed to what skinny jeans and a frown? Maybe a hoop ring in your ear? Its called fashion kid, to each his own.
The blues needs supporters not dividers, but it dont matter since the Black Keys are not a blues band. Now go upstairs and have your mom make you a snack.
imsilly August 3rd, 2012, 01:04 PM For indie rock a legit band. But please stop putting them in the "blues" section. SRV was what you would call progression different than the old school, yet you could hear howling wolf here, albert there, etc. Link me a Black Keys clip, where i'll see elements of the wolf, muddy, buddy, the three kings, robert johnson, etc.

You have to remember musicians like SRV, Howlin Wolf, the Three Kings, etc are just one type of blues based music.
Both The Black Keys and Jack White do very bluesy stuff, but it comes from a very different branch of the blues tree. People like Jack White admit to imitating players like Son House, Bukka White and John Lee Hooker more then say SRV would.
I personally like to see musicians channeling the more raw, stripped down, vampy blues of the Upper Mississippi and beyond because I get sick and tired of the regular 12 Bar Electric Dentist Blues you hear from every pub/bar band out there.
The Black Keys themselves made tributes to blues players like Junior Kimbrough. If you want to hear them play the blues listen to those records rather then their last few pop albums. Lets face it the last few records have been straight out pop music.
If you only recognize modern blues as music resembling the work of SRV, Bonamassa and John Mayer types you might have trouble seeing the blues in the Black Keys. Personally I feel that stuff is more insipid then the softening of The Black Keys over the past few years. Even their more pop like stuff is better then that tripe.
TinyGomery August 3rd, 2012, 01:08 PM I'm 35, and I grew up on SRV and Eric Clapton and all that, I just don't like it very much. I guess we just have different tastes. Did you listen to "Chulahoma"? I'm interested in your take. To me, it oozes with the best kind of blues. But the same music can strike all our ears differently.
TC III August 3rd, 2012, 01:16 PM I will listen to it Tiny. Dont get me wrong, the Black Keys are a great band, no doubt. Just look at their record sales, someone is enjoying it, and in the end, that is what matters most, that you are touching hearts. Regardless, I respect that.
Breen August 3rd, 2012, 10:39 PM I'm 29 I play the blues professionally most of my friends are in their early 20s we all listen to Blues including SRV, are we baby boomers? Wear a duster? Yeesh what a post. I'm 27 and I play the blues professionally, most of my friends listen to K-pop or Snow Patrol or some DJ-produced slick rap. We tend to use the internet to buy feather dusters online, and we all wear collared shirts and pants to work, I just have more work at night.
Its called music, and as you said, lets not divide good music into best music or worst music or music to be classified accordingly. Its just good music and lets call it that.
You have to remember musicians like SRV, Howlin Wolf, the Three Kings, etc are just one type of blues based music.

Best post from imsilly I've ever seen.

RubyRae August 5th, 2012, 12:33 AM They have egos? I thought they seem pretty chill.
I had coffee with Dan a few weeks back. First time meeting him through a mutual friend, and he was very chill, humble, and funny dude.
I would say, like many of us, life, family, kids, and vintage motorcycles consumes a lot of our time. Very glad to hear about the new album but they deserve a break too. These guys have worked their asses off past few years...Not to mention he's recording other artists and bands as well these days. I can't wait to get back to Nashville.
ga20t August 5th, 2012, 01:59 AM That would be awesome. I love the keys. Brothers is a great album and Rubber Factory is their best IMHO. I'll be looking forward to the next album, especially if Danger Mouse doesn't produce it.
Agree with everything here. El Camino makes me cringe, though I really wanted to like it, and still give it an honest go every now and then.
Can't say I'm a fan of what's come of James Mercer's musical output either since he made friends with "Danger Mouse". Bad mall music imo.
Freethenoise August 5th, 2012, 06:53 AM I got told a while back by a guy from my band that the entire Brothers album was recorded in a day.
El Camino took them a fair while to record. They took a really different approach and it doesn't sit well with others.
To me, Rubber Factory is my favourite album of theirs, followed pretty closely by Magic Potion. I prefer the raw approach of heavily bearded Dan.
El Camino certainly doesn't make me cringe but I'm not overly fond of it. It's like my relationship with One Hot Minute by the Chili's, I really dislike Navarro and most of that album but Flea played sublimely on that album and that's enough for me.
Seeing them live in October, should be fun.
NastyMojo August 24th, 2012, 09:51 PM I have been a big fan since Rubber Factory ..and I love El Camino. I thought it was genious. I think everything they do is better than the last.
