I tried out one of those new Squier Vintage Modified Jaguars yesterday at Sam Ash. It played very well, the neck wasn't too skinny, a comfortable C shape (I wish it had been a little chunkier), all the electronics worked as they should, although I definitely needed some help figuring out all the tone settings. The fit and finish was excellent. Made in Indoneeeesia. I quickly deduced that it was a good surf or special use guitar, but for what I do, I'll stick with my Telecaster, Gibsons, etc. There wasn't much sustain, although it didn't sound bad with some dirt added. Clean, it sounded excellent. Of course, the sustain could be rectified by modding, I'm sure. I thought it would work very well on 60's style garage rock.
Price was $299. I'd say it's a very good guitar for the money. They had a VM Jazzmaster too, but I was short on time and didn't play it. Looking forward to trying that out.

I'm really excited about these new VM Jags and Jazzies. I feel a Jazzmaster in my future if I find one that I like (preferably Oly White/Tort!). The new 72 Teles look awesome too, but my wife thinks I have too many Teles already. Less wrath would be incurred if I came home with a Jazzmaster. lol

Got the sunburst Jag last week, and it is great! In tune out of the box, very pretty, sounds good, definitely worth the price!
Haven't even upgraded the strings yet!

Jags and Jazzmasters are by virtue of their design less sustained than most other guitars - it's part of their unique sound.
After about half a year of jonesing (and about 2 months of SERIOUS jonesing after the rumors started flying about these VMs getting released), I got one of the Jazzmasters last week. I love it. I have a couple of mods in mind, but they're really just upgrades - new tuners, AVRI tremolo tailpiece, Mastery bridge. I figured I'd probably want to change the pickups but I find myself liking them just fine. Maybe if I get fidgety or bored in 6 months or something I'll try some SD Antiquities.
A lot of guitar for the money though.
