pamaz July 26th, 2012, 05:20 AM Hi guys.
You know . we are in a big crisis, so no money are there for my toys.
Therefore being changed my need for a tele sound, and before putting up fpr sale that guitar, I'm here to ask you experts, what shall I try to modify .
The guitar is a haar tele, , roughly around 3.6kg, alder body, hard rock maple neck fat c profile , with an indian rosewood fingerboard. Voodoo te50 Pickups, wilkinson bridge plate with glendale saddles. Stringed 0,10.
The sound it's very robben ford style. So not so twangy.
Now, I've in my availability to test the following pickups set :
- van zandt vintage plus.
- Suhr classic t
- Haussel broadcaster
The bridge plate has already been smoothed and made flat on my sanding belt.
Now, the guitar sounds great and really full bodied. But Too much full bodied, that it's not so twangy as I would like to have it. It's more a blues tele than a chicken picking tele.
I'm searching a sort of Brad Paisley sound. I already own many different amplifiers . You name it, I own it, simply because I build them for a living.
So pls help me to understand if there is any trick that I can try to empty the mid range of the guitar a little, just to have a more scooped sound.
Thanks a lot
Paolo
Donelson July 26th, 2012, 06:48 AM Welcome, Paolo. I don't have any advice for you; but do wish you well. Sounds like you have some good gear. Big cliche: "The sound comes from your fingers".
OK, I guess this would be advice: disconnect the pots & see what it sounds like "raw". Possibly, you need 500k or higher vol. & tone pots.

Hi Donelson and many thanks for your welcome.
let's say that the truth is i have tried most everything I can imagine, but still I'm not even in sight of the result I would like to reach
Therefore here I'm trying to get advice.
500k? already done Just to get a little of more piercing freqs, but not the "hole in the middle" I'm searching for.
Thanks BTW.
A friend is borrowing a couple of bridges. Let's hope for the best.
Bye and take care.
Paolo
ps: it's true : the tone is in the fingers. but still it's a difficult task to convince my fingers to get my tone.

Yes, I know what you mean! My fingers have different tone every day, but rarely the tone I was hoping for, haha.
helectrix July 26th, 2012, 08:12 AM You probably have already, if not, try lowering the pu's?
Rod Parsons July 26th, 2012, 09:36 AM The Suhr classic T set sounds as if it would give you the classic tele tone, not a rock/blues tone so much. I can only surmise that, due to the :Classic" in it's name, as I have never knowingly heard any of your choices. However it is pretty well established here on TDPRI, that it's got a lot to do with pickups, [how hot] and how far you set the pole pieces from the strings. The hotter generally means a bit less twang, which I believe is what you are wanting to hear from your tele. And welcome to this great and friendly forum..
Ripthorn July 26th, 2012, 11:16 AM I have played some Suhr pickups and he knows how to nail the tele tone, so I would try those.
pamaz July 26th, 2012, 03:45 PM Thanks guys for the advices.
the classic t is also my choice in another assembled tele i've got ( very light swamp ash body btw) and I can say they do pretty well.
But I suspect that the twang secret, lies more in the bridge itself than in the pickup brand and model.
One more question.
Is the twang something that you are able to listen also in the acousti cproperties of the guitar? I mean, no amps connected. (Sorry for my english. sometimes it's not so smooth as i would like!)
Ripthorn July 26th, 2012, 04:36 PM I have played a few teles where they sounded like a tele unplugged.
pamaz July 28th, 2012, 09:33 AM Ripthorn, it happens that I have tried many suhr teles, being friend with the italian distributor of that brand.
While Suhr are perfect guitars in luthery, I think that most of the time, soundwise, they lack that sort of "fender factor".
I mean, suhr are too much educated guitars for being fenderish. It's just like motorbikes. Japanese motorbikes are perfect machines.
But once you drive a Ducati, (that are full of defects, direct experience here) , you'll have some problems in going back to that perfect world.
Same with tellys. Suhr are excellent tellys. But not so telecasters as I would like.

Colt W. Knight July 28th, 2012, 09:40 AM This is not on your list, but David Allen wound a set for me called the Colt 51. I have used a lot of tele pickups, and those are the best Ive used. Great Country pickup. There are some videos on his website if you click on the description.
guitar2005 July 28th, 2012, 09:49 AM I can't say enough good things about the Van Zandt pickups. I strongly recommend them. They're twangy but not ear piercing and they really let the tone of the guitar shine.
