Budda July 25th, 2012, 12:13 AM Okay, here's something fun to try. And since I've seen these things go awry rather quickly, I thought some guidelines would spark some creativity here as opposed to just having it turn into a muddled "free for all"!
Writing a "Tune" without a Melody, just a Form.
It's in 4/4, and the Form is 16 Bars.
No more than 2 Chords per Measure.
Everyone can add either 1 or 2 Chords, but they can only add ONE Measure. No Ties, or crossing Bar Lines, etc. No coming back a second time.
The real challenge IMO, is to put something together that is catchy and flows. Not to play the weirdest Chord ever, etc.
Here's the first Measure filled in:

Budda July 26th, 2012, 01:04 PM Okay!
Now it's taking shape!
Keep 'em coming, everyone.
I've been playing with the Changes so far see a few cool possibilities there. It'll be cool to see what we end up with.
Of course, as the Form gets closer to completion it gets a little more tricky to make it "work"! LOL
I had it easy with the first Bar! :)

Some interesting choices there so far.
Getting it all tied together without getting weird is the real challenge!

Okay, the Chords seem to be getting more and more "complex".
Hopefully, everyone is still thinking about a solid Progression. These last 4 Bars will need to be thoughtfully treated to really keep things from getting weird.
ScatMan July 27th, 2012, 06:56 AM Chord voicings might pull it together.
Here's everyone's contribution (with some minor changes): a 12 bar progression going back to the D..

Bravo Kevin!
boneyguy July 27th, 2012, 12:05 PM Well that is a testament to the king of instruments: the piano. That sounded very good. I'd like to hear someone's version of that on guitar. I don't think it would stand up nearly as well as the piano simply because of the voicing/voice leading restrictions on a guitar that the piano doesn't have. But I could be wrong.
klasaine July 27th, 2012, 12:48 PM Rough and ready but here ya go.
*Web cam mic and youtube 'record' app. I don't know where the rotary sound came from ... or the little EQ shifts - ?
I added two beats, a G and an A chord after the E7sus+9 (which is really just an Asus4 chord) to get me a resolve to D.
I'm 'dropped D' tuned.
It was fun!

boneyguy July 27th, 2012, 12:55 PM I had a feeling you'd take up the challenge and prove me wrong Ken. That was really good.
What about this for the next challenge.
Write a melody for it. That would be an interesting group challenge. Everyone adds a note of a specified duration. Hmmmmm
Or don't specify any duration. Just suggest a note and then the phrasing can be left up to anyone who wants to submit an interpretation through a video/audio clip. Hmmmmmm
jbmando July 27th, 2012, 01:00 PM Ken, did you put a D+ in the 9th bar? With my crappy computer speakers I can't hear it too well.
Edit: Yep, it's there, my left speaker was cutting out. Great job.
Budda July 27th, 2012, 01:01 PM Yeah, Boney that was coming next! LOL
I just didn't want it to get too far out, so I tried some "ground rules" to try and keep it fairly normal. However, no one has repeated even one of the Chords yet! LOL
Geeks..........
;)
Anyway, no crossing Bar Lines! Nope.
You get 1 Measure, 1 or 2 Chords.
THAT's a large part of the "challenge". As well as the "catchy" part.
Anything goes means it would dissolve quickly into a bunch of meandering.
I hope someone ties this Form up nicely, with some solid Chordal choices. Remember, you need to leave a big, obvious "pocket/hole" for the next poster to see and hear the Logic there. No need to make it cryptic.

Beautiful!
Sounded really nice, Ken.
And the "Leslie/Trem" thing worked well. Cool, intentional or not!

Sorry. I didn't mean to take over. I just got excited and blurted it out.

Edit: Yep, it's there, my left speaker was cutting out. Great job.
It's in the 'middle' of the chord.
Part of the challenge for me was to play the chords as written.
Other than a passing tone (or three), all the extensions or just the plain triads that everybody wrote are there.
*The only thing I 'added' was a G and an A chord on beats 3 and 4 of bar twelve. As I said, to get me back to D. That E7sus+9 is an Asus chord really so I'm not re-harmonizing anything - just adding some movement.
Budda July 27th, 2012, 01:29 PM Sorry. I didn't mean to take over. I just got excited and blurted it out.
Hahahhaha! Sometimes you try
to hold back, but it just doesn't work out.
Yeah, I think that'll be fun!
Possibly Melodies. Or maybe exploring the Voice Leading possibilities. Anyway, it's pretty cool how people are joining in and making contributions.
mrboson July 27th, 2012, 01:33 PM I just didn't want it to get too far out, so I tried some "ground rules" to try and keep it fairly normal. However, no one has repeated even one of the Chords yet! LOL
Geeks..........
;)
I actually believed that was one of the ground rule,, and so by the time we got to bar 9 I figured we didn't have a choice but to start getting out there a bit. Re-reading the thread I realize now we could have repeated chords .
Oh well... ScatMan's and KL's interpretation of this is awesome. Man, you guys are great!
klasaine July 27th, 2012, 01:50 PM I actually believed that was one of the ground rule,, and so by the time we got to bar 9 I figured we didn't have a choice but to start getting out there a bit. Re-reading the thread I realize now we could have repeated chords .
Oh well... ScatMan's and KL's interpretation of this is awesome. Man, you guys are great!
The Bm, Dmaj7 and D+ chords are 'really' all just D chords ... with a little color on them. They're functioning as a I chord. G/D is just a G chord (IV). Even the Em/D is sort of a G.
jbmando July 27th, 2012, 03:03 PM Ken, you didn't have a ceiling fan on while you played that, did ya?
klasaine July 27th, 2012, 03:44 PM Ken, you didn't have a ceiling fan on while you played that, did ya?
Lol! No ceiling fan.
I did have a long delay and as you can see I'm wrangling the neck a lot.
(Headphones help)
This was the 1st time I recorded using the YouTube enabled application (it's really basic and super fast for uploading to youtube which leads me to believe that the quality - bit rate - is the lowest possible).
Usually I use a Zoom Q3 or the movie making programs on either my mac or windows 7 Samsung, which are actually pretty decent.
w3stie July 27th, 2012, 09:14 PM Very nice work guys!
ScatMan July 27th, 2012, 09:22 PM Sounds great Ken! Really liked that.

I just used the notes shown by everyone that posted their fingerings.
I did change the root of Davib96's E7#9sus4 in the twelfth measure to an A making it an A7sus and then adding the A7 to get back to D.
Here is a version with both piano and guitar: TDPRI Chords: Piano/Guitar (http://soundcloud.com/kevin-ludwig/tdpri-chords-piano-guitar)
btw: Budda, I'm not trying to hijack you, I'm just having some fun doing my own thing on the side.
stinkey July 28th, 2012, 05:01 AM I think it sound way much better then i supposed, it is clearly music, not just a game.
So fun to here it play by others to. Of course i played it in front of my computer.
Piotr July 28th, 2012, 06:46 AM That was a nice idea and worked out pretty well!
Klasaine, the weird Leslie sound is a result of lo-fi compression in a webcam/youtube recording. You would get the same effect sometimes while having a Skype video chat with a poor web connection
klasaine July 28th, 2012, 10:46 AM Thanks Piotr.
That seems right. I can relate that to the sound quality of SKYPE most of the time.
klasaine July 28th, 2012, 05:04 PM It deserves better than my first attempt.
I think this is more representative of what it can be.

That's surprisingly good!! :-)
Is it bad that I feel kind of proud to have contributed a chord to that? I mean, that E7 sounds just wonderful!

eddie knuckles July 29th, 2012, 02:45 PM beautiful progression, beautiful articulation and execution. Very nice. Thank you for that.

If I were doing it I'd insert some chords:

| G | Bm | Asus4 | A13 |
| Dmaj7 D+ | G/D D7 |Gmaj7 |Gm6 l
|D D Em F#m7|G G E7#9sus4 A7| D |G Gm6| D~
jbmando July 30th, 2012, 10:13 PM My take on these chords. I missed the next to last chord (Gm6) so I played it again.
