flyingbanana July 24th, 2012, 03:31 PM Still thinking about what to get. At first it was a Sheraton and Epi 339, and then I wanted to keep my Gibson LP Studio Faded and just learn to be happy.
After that thought faded away...I really was gassing for an SG with P90's and the cream binding, but those necks have maple fretboards. Not.
So here I am contemplating the Godin Core P90 model in light burst.
What a gorgeous guitar. The limited videos I have seen of this guitar have it sounding ok. Set neck...P90's, chambered mohogany body with maple cap and around 8 lbs. Rosewood fretboard. So far so good.
My only concerns are neck joint and the area around the headstock. Is everything good here?
Oh, and the order is non refundable as it would be a special order.
So I need to be absolutely sure I want this before placing the order. Price is about 850.
Any opinions on Godin? Here's a pic.
bullfrogblues July 24th, 2012, 07:04 PM It looks great, and P90s are my favorite pup! Godin makes a very good product from the few I've tried.
spikypaddy July 24th, 2012, 07:14 PM Godin do make great guitars.
However, if you do still have SG P90 GAS, the Classics are great guitars. I have a 2011 and that DEFINITELY has a rosewood board and sounds and plays beautifully. I couldn't be happier with mine - and I've not been a Gibson guy for a long, long time!
c.winn July 24th, 2012, 07:16 PM No real knock here - but why go with cream P90 covers & a cream toggle knob with a black pickguard & black tophat knobs?

It looks ok. Nice contrast of colors.
ROADMAN July 24th, 2012, 09:10 PM I really like that look ....Godin is a quality product that is well respected up here in Canader...they are made in Quebec sweatshops by ex Newfoundland cod fishermen they keep hopped up on poutine but if you can get past that get her done...
very nice and I'll be looking to try one if I see one...thanks for the GAS

Bwaaaahahahahahahaha!!!!!
In all seriousness, though, I've never played a guitar from the Godin family (Simon & Patrick, Art & Lutherie, Seagull, Norman, Godin) that didn't punch above its weight, price/quality-wise.
Stubee July 25th, 2012, 12:04 AM Guess my GAS is at a very low level as haven't felt that way in years.
If it were me & I wanted a SG w. P-90s I'd get one...if I really knew I wanted one. If I couldn't afford what I wanted I'd scrimp/save til I could.
You sure ya know just what ya want?

No. That's the problem. I know I want an SG like was posted above, but that Godin is nice. But the SG sounds so doggone good and has the Gibson name on it, but it doesn't have rw fretboards anymore.
It's tough trying to decide.

Must confess I worked ridiculously long hours at 2 jobs simultaneously to be able to afford my SG, but it was sooooo worthwhile!
But at the end of the day maybe what the OP wants is just a nice, P90 loaded guitar.

spikypaddy July 25th, 2012, 01:18 AM Oh stop!
Just checked out the Gibson site... There are 2 P90 SGs:
-One is the SG Standard P90, which does indeed come with a baked maple board, but also tulip button tuners and trapezpoid inlays.
-They do also, however, still list the SG Classic, which is what I have. It comes with dot inlays, round button tuners and a rosewood board. They only list it in a faded finish, however... But I believe, as with the Highway 1 Fenders, that you can polish the finish up to a gloss. Alternatively, some stockists will probably still have the old gloss finish model in stock. I know the shop mine came from still has 2. The SG Classic is also the cheaper of the 2 bound fretboard P90 models...
Not that I'm trying to tempt you further, or anything!
Jericho75 July 25th, 2012, 10:45 AM Out of curiosity, what is your issue with the maple fretboard? I have 3 Gibbies with maple boards and feel pretty much no difference.

To my ears, the lows are tighter, and there are slightly more highs. This could be a good thing I guess, but I am a traditionalist. I like that rw warms things up.
Ed P July 25th, 2012, 12:13 PM I've played a couple of Godin electrics that have smallish necks. Have you spent time time playing them, and have you tried several to see if their neck sizes are consistently to your liking? Non-refundable is a risky business as far as I'm concerned.

No, I haven't. I'm trying to find out if there are any here in so cal. This brand has a loyal following, but they are hard to find.

About 8 years ago there was a place called Charlie's Music, or some such name, in the Burbank, Eagle Rock area. They might still have some. You could also Google Godin dealers in So Cal. That had a ton of them. But, again, that was quite a few years ago.
jefrs July 25th, 2012, 01:08 PM Out of curiosity, what is your issue with the maple fretboard? I have 3 Gibbies with maple boards and feel pretty much no difference.
I have no problem with maple fretboards (esp on tele) myself but I think Rory Gallagher summed it best with a comment that a maple fretboard felt like playing the sideboard, a nice piece of furniture.
I mean, an SG with a maple fretboard? - that is just aesthetically wrong on so many levels.
bendecaster July 25th, 2012, 02:17 PM I may be wrong, but I think Rory Gallagher was speaking of the plain maple boards, or the high-gloss ones that were available while he was with us.
I may also be wrong again, but I think the baked maple is a different animal that is meant to have the characteristics of R/W, or maybe possibly ebony.
I would like to do a blind test myself. To see, er... hear, feel if there was an actual distinguishable difference between R/W or baked maple. I think I would have reservations being it is a "new" thing that's been thrown into a known, good working combination that has been traditionally used for decades. It hasn't stood the test of time.

Les Paul Tribute with some mods works for me ...

No, you are right.
He was referring to the varnished wood finish on his mum's sideboard.
But hmm, baked maple = burnt wood?

studio1087 July 25th, 2012, 04:46 PM The Godin looks beautiful but $850 seems high.
The Godin Session guitars are about $479. The better semi hollow jazz guitars that they build are $700-ish.
I wonder why a solid body with 2 P90's is $849???
You can find a Les Paul 50's Tribute for $800-ish.
The 60's Tributes are less.
$699 - get this - watch the Greg Koch video! (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Gibson-Les-Paul-Studio-60s-Tribute-/360471887254?pt=Guitar&hash=item53edcc7d96)

Hey John...thanks for bringing up the Session by Godin. It's more known as the LG P90 model. I found a used one in great shape at a GC a few states over. Got it on deposit will see about getting it shipped to the local store for me to check it out. Either way...got it for half off the new price of 479.
Here's a pic of what it looks like. Not the actual guitar though. But close. An interesting observation is the fact that these have a brass tone bar similar to the Taipan Tone version. I wish Vince was still around. He made great stuff.
allen082 July 26th, 2012, 01:39 PM the SG Classics come up on craigslist here pretty often. Saw one last week for $600.
I sold my sg junior a few years ago and have regretted it ever since.

Funnily enough I've just been eyeballing a '64 Junior today... Man, that thing is sweet!

Nice tele Merlin.
So I finally have a slightly used Godin LG P90 on the way from an east coast GC to a local one. They supposedly threw in a case for free...they didn't want to ship it unless it was in one I guess.
The wait begins. I'll be able to fully check it out before dropping the ball on it.

Gret Koch is the Jack Black of guitar players!
flyingbanana August 9th, 2012, 05:06 AM Well, as it turns out, the Godin ended up having a few issues, weight being one, and I decided against getting it...especially when they wouldn't budge from the price. The Godin LG's seem so small and look pretty good, so the weight threw me for a loop. I would have though maybe 7 lbs...but we're talking dead weight. Had to be 9.5 to 10 lbs.
The Godin did in fact look identical to the one in the pic above. Here it is so you don't have to scroll.

So, I am on the search for a certain Peavey Firenza. I will keep you guys posted on that. I need me some P90.
