preslotted 1-3/4 bone nut?

Hey.

I`ve ordered a Musikraft neck with a 1-3/4 nut width. Wanted a neck that`s similar to my archtops neck this time.

I have the nut files, and have done some nuts for my other guitars, but these have all been from preslotted bone nuts. I tried to google it, but I can`t seem to find a preslotted 1-3/4 bone nut, does this exist? If not I guess I have to just buy some blanks.

Thanks,
Michael

I've been using a lot of Tusq nuts lately, and they're every bit (THUNDERCLAP!) as good as bone nuts. They do come in 1 3/4" preslotted widths. Something to consider... (DUCK!).

On a serious note. If you have the nut files, you can buy a blank and cut your own nut in no time. You will be glad you learned how. Gives you a lot of freedom when you setup new guitars by allowing you to change string spacing and what not.

Thanks guys, I`ve thought about Tusq, but I really like bone, so I guess I`ll stick with that. Colt, yeah, I think I`m gonna cut my own, just buy some blanks. Btw,I`ve read lots of your posts, learned a lot :)

I figured out how to make nuts several years ago, when I found the preset spacing on store-bought nuts to be "wrong" for me sometimes. Also I'm picky about the heights.

That was when I lived in NYC; very hard to find a luthier there who will make a nut at a fair (low!) price. Back home now in Nashville, the cost is more reasonable. So that's an option too. A pro will probably give you a better-looking nut.

Daunting at first to DIY, but pretty easy to "get it done" with the few essential tools needed. Even if it doesn't "look like the picture", as long as the spacing, heights, & pitch are good, that's all that's important.

I do most of the sanding, filing, etc. outside on the carport; there's a weird stink to that bone dust that lingers!

For what it's worth, I've made dozens of bone nuts. I started using Tusq during back-to-back 12 string builds, it doesn't chip as easily as bone so the closely spaced slots weren't nearly such a pain.
