P90 Guitar

revelation2012

Having sold off my P90 equipped guitar a while back I find myself wishing I had not. I know here in the next few months may pickup another P90 equipped guitar.

My question is which one to get. I definitely need to keep this in the sub $800 range. But I want to keep my options open; do I buy, make from parts? Do I keep it close to upper bracket or are there some absolute killer guitars in the sub $500 range? Right now headstock label is not really that critical I just want to get the nicest guitar I can at the price point keeping in mind the $800 ceiling.

One thing I have been looking at is there is a difference to how the P90s respond to say a slab body like an SG or a tele as opposed to a Les Paul. The P90 to me seem to mellow out more with the mass of the Less Paul as opposed to a slab style body like a tele or an SG. Being an early Who fan I tend to gravitate toward slab body P90 sound but am not married to it. But Fender makes some thin lines now with the F hole and P90s and then there is the Squire Custom II.... Then there is the Agile AL 3XXX with P90s or the Epi 56....

I am also open to adding H sized P90s to a guitar if there are models that give a convincing P90 sound.

Anyway I am looking at getting something in the next month or two but curious to see what sleepers are out there I may not be considering. Or some cheaper guitars that are some really killer players with small mods. I am also open to making my own tele version with P90s but I think I would be pushing the upper limits of the budget doing that. If that is the case I might as well start looking at the Les Paul Tributes or the SG.

Thanks.

I'd highly recommend a Gibson Les Paul Junior. Mine is about three years old and has a very thin finish on it. The one they're making now has a gloss nitro finish and goes for $700. Even with the single pickup, they're very versatile and fun to play. Mine is the best guitar I've ever owned.

If you've never heard of Reverend guitars, you should check them out. They make all kinds of P90 guitars. They're not as well known, but they people that play them tend to love them.

I love Gibsons P-90's and sg classics are $749 right now at Musicians Friend. SG 60's tributes are always $799. There are quite a few bargains out there.

I agree with this. My LP Standard was 3 times the price of my Jr but that single P90 wins out every time. I thought that the honeymoon would end sooner or later but I still can't put it down after almost a year. While you're looking you should at least try one.

What are the thoughts on the Squier Custom II?

I have consiered getting a Blacktop tele and putting some H sized P90s in it. Anyone know if the bridge of the Blacktop will bave any issues with string alignment over the polde pieces of typical humnbuckers?

I highly recommend the Epiphone '56 goldtop with P90s. For the $500 price (I got mine for $399 with an ad match at GC a couple years ago), the quality is great and the sound is unbelievable. I replaced mine with a Gibson of similar style but the Epi actually sounded better. You owe it to yourself to at least try one out.

I am leaning towared three guitars. I need to not keep creeping up in price with some of the name brands. It is easy to do:

1. Godin LG 90
2. Agile AL 3XXX P90
3. Squier Custom II

ANything else in the $500 or less range I should keep in mind? Of the three mentioned above I think bang for the buck I should be looking at also? Used or new?

I have the Squier Tele Custom ll like Hewaki and Booger Rooger and while mines is on the heavy side weightwise I like it alot. I had it painted Fiesta Red with a matching headstock by a buddy who paints cars. The Duncan designed P90s are nice but I'm thinking about trying some TV Jones Classics {in the P 90 mount} for a budget La Cab gtr. I also tried out the modern player thinline Boyd posted above and it was a great sounding gtr. Alot lighter than my Tele Custom ll and the hollow body seemed to add a bit of depth/resonsance to the tone. While I love the teles you might want to look at the new Squier Jazzmasters
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-Vintage-Modified-Jazzmaster-Electric-Guitar-107920753-i2518207.gc

The one I played earlier this week sounded awesome and the floating tremolo was smooth and shimmery. I love the old rockabilly and Chet stuff so the wiggle bar is a cool feature.

What are the thoughts on the Squier Custom II?

Had one. Loved it. Great neck, and the pickups were very nice. A couple of bits of cheapness in the hardware, but nothing major. I sold it to a friend during a herd-thinning episode, and I'll probably never be able to get it back, 'cuz he loves it too much.

I highly recommend the Epiphone '56 goldtop with P90s. For the $500 price (I got mine for $399 with an ad match at GC a couple years ago)

Agreed. I filled the hole left by the Custom II with a black Goldtop. (I know, but Epiphone still calls it a "Goldtop.") I got the same deal as above, with a free hard case. Great guitar, excellent fit and finish. They sold a lot at that price, so they should be out there on the used market for peanuts.

As for the Godin, if you can find one at a good price, and it feels and sounds good to you, jump on it. Their quality is top-notch at any price.

EDIT: I haven't seen one in person, but the Fender Blacktop Jaguar 90 (CAR, yum!) looks pretty cool for $500 or less. If it sounds like it looks, I may have a problem...

Music Man Axis Super Sport MM90 (would probably push the $800 budget used, but doable in painted vs flame/quilt tops) or an older Axis Sport MM90, which has no binding and typically painted. I'd also say Music Man Albert MM90, but I'd be surprised to see one for $800.

I have a Super Sport MM90 that I paid more than $800 used. It's my go-to guitar for versatility or when I don't know what I'll be playing.

The Squier Custom II is a great guitar but I didn't like the neck (too chunky for my tastes) so mine now has a Squier Pro-Tone Tele neck.

If you're a fan of thickish necks, the Custom II is right up your street. If you prefer a different neck, it comes in so far under your budget that a replacement isn't a problem.

THE bang for the buck P90 guitar IMO is the RWG(Raven West Guitars) 590T. I got one and love it. Its a f hole semi hollow dual P90 Tele. Beautiful, stays in tune, plays great, sounds great, is great. Can be had new for $350. I got mine on eBay, with a cosmetic blemish I still cant find, for $202.75 shipped.

The only downside is very narrow tapered vol pot, tone pot don't do much, noisy pickups but they sound like P90s should. Check them out.

Amen, and aftermarket, you can score one for sub- 200. Mine is just incredible. I'm a broken record for these things. It needed a smidge of setup, but it's intonated fine, 100's of sweaty beer belly soakings later. I have played WAY prettier, WAY niftier rides, but I keep going back to this one, in yellow. Get a decent tube amp with the change, my friend. The only thing I'll upgrade, but not really yet a necessity, would be the one chop noname tuners, which are doing ok right now, four or so years later, nearly daily and nightly use. Try one!

I miss the sound of my 97 Peerless made Epiphone Casino. Had a Rio Grande in the neck and a bigsby. That neck was just too thin after a while, and I don't even have very big hands. Great sounds though and it nailed some Ernest Tubb tones. Selling it helped me get a S&W MP40 though, but I miss P-90s. I'd love to find an Epiphone ES-295.

Okay I did a deal! The best thing about it is I layed no cash on the table for it. I traded some various redundant items in my arsenal. In all I layed out the equivalent in trade of $290. That is what I had in the stuff.

I walked with a really good condition 2010 Epi 56 Gold Top Ebony Les Paul. dont know why they just dont call it a 56 ebony? Anyway it is pretty well set up but stock. Sustians good and plays really well. There are a couple scuffs on the upper bout where your arm lies but the rest is really clean. Frets a nice too, no wear that I can tell. NOt heavy for a Les Paul. At least it is not nearly as heavy as the Agile Les Paul I sold a couple years ago.

I agree that having an ebony "56 Gold Top" is silly, but who cares when it plays as nicely as it does? (It's especially funny since AFAIK back in the day the ebony was an upcharge and the gold top was cheaper.) The output jack is not very durable, and the pots are of questionable quality, but the pickups and the guitar itself are top notch. The P90s on this Epi "Gold TOp" seem really hot compared to a Gibson with P90s I had a while back. Is the output on these Epi P90s hotter than your typical P90?

charlie chitlin
July 25th, 2012, 01:09 PM
Slightly hotter, usually.
Gibson's run in the low 8Ω range and Epis in the low 9's.
Just roll off the guitar's volume to clean them up.
You can also lower them.
I keep mine pretty far from the the strings.

Well, they are pretty tame compared to the fire-breathing things in this ol' Peavey Firenza. Some of the best P-90s on the planet:

No, it didn't replace the Dano... and no, the Dano isn't for sale.

The P90s on this Epi "Gold TOp" seem really hot compared to a Gibson with P90s I had a while back. Is the output on these Epi P90s hotter than your typical P90?

I have pretty much no experience with "real" Gibson P90s, so I couldn't say. They definitely are capable of hitting the amp a little harder than some of my other pickups.

Just roll off the guitar's volume to clean them up.
You can also lower them.
I keep mine pretty far from the the strings.

Yep. The only adjustment I made to my Epi 56 was lowering the pickups a fair bit. It is no problem at all to find a spot where rolling off the volume cleans it up, and rolling it on brings the dirt. If they are a bit hotter, it's nothing I feel a need to complain about.

I have this feeling that when I'm old and my memory starts to get jumbled, I'm going to be ranting to everybody that some guy out east has my old Dano 12 string and won't give it back to me...

Well I looked under the plate where the pots are and the wiring will need to be changed in my opinion. There are solderless clips holsing something together in there. I am not sure if that is the pickups or the pickups selector and jack. The pickups are not the braided type for sure.

After I settle in with the Epti 56 I am probably going to change all the electornics and the pickups and put a bone nut in.

I got a Peerless with Epi/BHK dog ear P90s. I was never happy with the pups so I replaced them with Bare Knuckle Blue Notes and replaced all the electrics at the same time. What a difference! I'm amazed how lively and dynamic the new pups sound. I'm also amazed at how poor the Epi pups and the wiring were.

in my opinion, when you put a P90 on a simple slab of mahogany, like a les paul junior, you get a very thick somewhat dark sound (at higher gains). Lots of guys like that, hence their popularity. P90s are actually big single coils which tend to be all bottom and top and not as much mids as a humbucker.. some guys like les pauls with P90s, the maple cap adds a bit of brightness and gives the overall sound a little more mid.

They're both good scenarios. I like P90s a lot, boost the mids and play super clean and you get a great country sound. Crank it up and you get a great rock sound.

I have 4 P-90 guitars and am qute happy with all of them, and all are probably within your price range.

One at the top of your range, probably, is a Hamer Special. Basically Hamer's take on a Les Paul Special, but with their 3-pot control layout and no pickguard. I added the latter to mine. They come with Seymour Duncan P-90's stock, and the guitar is USA-made. I bought mine used (they're not in production iirc) for $450, but that was about a dozen years ago):

For a much cheaper solidbody, another out-of-production based-on-an-LP Special guitar I own is a Schecter Tempest Special. I bought mine used for $250 w/ohsc 5 or 6 years ago. These are MIK w/Duncan Designed pups. They really nail the TV Yellow finish, unlike many cheapies:

If you're into something with a Bigsby and f-holes, I got a couple of those too, both MIK Epiphones. My WildKat I picked up used for 3 bills about 4 years ago. These are more akin to a chambered LP than to a semi like a 335, and resist feedback well as a result. Also, the body size is smaller than a 335. This particular one is a limited production color with gold hardware, so it says "Limited Edition Custom Shop" (ha!) on the back of the headstock:

Last, a true hollowbody, I have a Casino I recently received as a gift. I believe the donors paid around $285 w/ohsc for it. It has several mods (Grover tuners, Rio Grande in neck, Bigsby, added master vol) and had a broken pickup selector toggle (since fixed) when bought:

I miss the sound of my 97 Peerless made Epiphone Casino. Had a Rio Grande in the neck and a bigsby. That neck was just too thin after a while, and I don't even have very big hands. Great sounds though and it nailed some Ernest Tubb tones.

Dude, small world. I have that Casino! Her name is now Mary.

Whoa man! We talked before when I first got her, but I didn't know who it went to, just that it was a gift. How is she treating you? I do miss her but like I said the neck got too thin for me after a while.

Really really enjoying her. Have gigged with both my rock band (above pic) and my church band, First Things First. Here she is w/FtF on the Bo Diddley Plaza:

My first and only P90-guitar is the Fender JA-90.
It's a Tele with Gibson-like specs, best of both worlds.
I threw a Bigsby on mine, and it's the guitar i play 99% of the time now.. Made me wish i had 'discovered' P90's a lot sooner..

This is my Tokai LS95S. It's an MIJ Tokai. Fantastic guitar. The build quality and finish is top notch. The neck is a nice, fat, '50s profile as you'd expect, and plays very nicely. Sounds great too. The pickups are perhaps not as hot as Gibson P90s, but that suits me perfectly. Even the neck pickup is very useable - nice and clear. I scored it for roughly $800US including a case - brand spanking new! Forget the Epiphone, get one of these.

There are soooo many nice ones out there. Personally my LP Special is in my opinion one of the nicest guitars I've ever owned. I call it my "where have you been all my life?" guitar. I also have a Gibby Tribby Les Paul. Those are sweet too for around $650 or so.
