New guy, with some problems

Hi all, Let me introduce myself , I'm a 19 year old from India(you won't be able to listen to a lot of guitar music around here), and i don't even have a good background in Indian music, but 8 months back I accidently got introduced to blues and rock music(SRV, Zeppelin, Hendrix etc.) i ended up being crazy about all that . I own a crappy acoustic guitar now, got my basics laid. Telecasters are my favorite guitars, more like a dream guitar. You won' get to buy good guitars around my place, and good fenders costs like 200-350$ more than the USA price margins, that too at bigger cities(2-3 days in train). None of my mates like this kind of music . The only thing that keeps me going is I like what I'm doing. I'm buying a MIM tele soon(in 2-3 months), but the problem is people trash talk on me for spending money on a guitar,You might be thinking 'Wtf'? But people here are like that ! They think spending more than 150$ on a guitar is a waste. With all these negatives and you guys might understand how much a guy with 7 months experience can play to shut those mouths and I'm tired my friends.. I need some good words to back me up......

Just get that guitar and play whatever you like. It's all good, to be brave enough to be different at your age is admirable.

If someone had told SRV that he was a fool for playing the guitar, much less blues guitar, do you think he would have listened? Heck No!

I just got a MIM and I love it. It far outshines anything else I've got! If you can afford it, go for it. Live, Love and Enjoy! Rock On ss192!

That's what happens when the music gets ahold of you. Don't worry about what your friends are saying, learn to play and love the music. Eventually these same friends will be hiring you to do their birthday parties and wedding receptions. That will be a good time, no?

Welcome!

You've obviously got a passion for music and playing - so for you it's definitely worth getting a decent guitar that you'll be happy to play. And that's all that matters, forget other people's negativity.

And welcome to the forum

Welcome and keep your path to music. If it is what you love just do it and your friends will like it too someday. Follow your heart.

Welcome Friend!

As it has already been so wisely said, follow your heart.

Respond from what is welling up inside, not to what is being imposed from outside. I can only speak for my own experience, but at some point it begins to hurt too much not to play.

Something that helped me answer my critics in art school was a drive to 'out art' those who talked down to me. My revenge was to develop myself farther artistically than I thought they were. At one point I won a fellowship to graduate school with the same body of work that the nay sayers were beating me down over. Go figure...

My guess is that those who are criticizing you are saying far more about themselves than they are about you. Don't let the them wear you down. Get a guitar, any guitar at first, and learn all you can. Ignore all the technical gear babble and build your ear and your fingers.

Never forget that tone is in your hands and your heart. All else is just compensation or avoiding practice time. Play till your fingers bleed, then play some more. Seek out others who are like minded. In a country your size there are bound to be others like yourself who may be afraid to come forward. There, my friend, are your bandmates...

Expose yourself to as much music of all types as you possibly can. You have internet, use youtube to research the music that moves you. But learn other genres as well. Go see live bands of all kinds. Meld everything you hear into your own personal expression style. If you are able to record yourself, share music over the net with others. Read poetry, literature, and everything else voraciously! Be a sponge and soak up everything, sort through it and keep what fits, file the rest away for later when it fits too. Feed the beast. Love the beast. Nurture the beast.

There are a couple cheesy quotes that come to mind.

The Fool persistent in their folly is wise.
-William Blake (paraphrased)

Those who were dancing seemed utterly insane to those who could not hear the music.
-A poster on some internet guitar forum. (also paraphrased)

I'm from India as well (Delhi actually)and am 20 yrs old (turned 20 on 26th july) .....you say you have been just introduced to blues...I was introduced to blues and rock music when i was 10 (imagine in 6th standard listening to AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long")
You have absolutely no idea how great it is to see another indian on this forum..
I generally listen to the bands that are not so famous but still have miles better music than the pretty famous ones (the current pop-artists).To answer your question, just say "what can i do,you don't know music"...It works like a charm and pisses them a whole lot
I have been able to convert a lot of people to blues and other types of rock.(my elder brother has kind of converted towards blues rock) and don't worry what others say or think it is all about believing in yourself
And i too own a tele (squier affinity,i think it's the only squier available other than the cv's) even though other people tried to convince me to get a strat or an lp (that's frankly the only 2 guitar shapes they know about) i was in the hunt for a tele or an sg and eventually got a tele
As for being different, it feels awesome and remember the lyrics of the song 'no cigar' :

"'I don't care where I belong no more.
What we share or not I will ignore.
And I won't waste my time fitting in.
'Cause I don't think contrast is a sin."

Have fun and stay awesome

There is people on this site that would walk for 3 days to buy a tele:mrgreen:.

I can kind of feel your pain a bit. I seem to be two steps ahead of all my buddys musicwise, at least i was back in the day. I listened to a lot of bands before they went mainstream and my friends wouldnt give it two seconds. Then when the radio started playing the bands (because by then they usually sold out to make an easy buck) they would fall in love with the band and id be tired of them and onto the next thing.

I guess the moral of my ramblings is, dont care what they say... You can tell a true musician by what they listen too. If your being influenced by jimmi, zeppelin and so on you will end up a well rounded musician... if your influenced by Bieber or whatever the fad is, you will never be original and be just another cookie cutter player.

Welcome!

Here's a true virtuoso guitarist from your own country!
http://fareed.com/
He's one of the teachers at TrueFire.com so maybe it would be fun for you to check it out!
He's a jazzer, but with a "vocabulary" that far transcends that genre.

I love his playing!

Welcome, follow the music and where it takes you, it makes you happy. In the south U.S. we say "let criticism fall off you like water off a ducks' back." Critics are here because they can't do what they really want. Listen to the music, never the critics.

You’ve received such wise advice from those who posted before me. All I can do is reiterate, follow your heart. There are no hard fast rules that say if you come from culture ABC you can only own a certain instrument to play XYZ music on. I’m reminded of prince in the early 1980’s, if I recall correctly, he set out to form a band that transcended racial and gender boundaries. If SRV, Hendrix and Zeppelin are your inspiration and the telecaster is your voice, sing it loud and proudly.

I predict that the mates who are now disparaging you may soon start scheming about how they can acquire Telecasters, Stratocasters, and even the G-guitars !

Sometimes being a leader is a slow start, but with the interest and passion you've expressed, those of your friends who are worth being called that will follow, or at least respect your choices. The others may fall away, to be replaced with others that have interests more in line with yours. (They're usually called band-mates :cool:)

And welcome to the forum.
