jbmando July 21st, 2012, 05:06 PM You mean when the song starts or all the ad lib stuff before that?
jbmando July 21st, 2012, 05:14 PM When the song riff starts, it sounds and looks to me like he's playing:
Low E note > x7xxxx > x54xxx > x4222x > 022100
Seasicksailor July 21st, 2012, 05:15 PM I think he means up to 1:53.
I think he's playing octaves here and there, but I'm not sure. Great playing though.
jbmando July 21st, 2012, 05:21 PM Yes, there are octaves, fourths and fifths in that section. Sometimes the high E drones, too, it sounds like to me.
Seasicksailor July 21st, 2012, 05:28 PM jbmando, I'm not sure if you're familiar with the original. It's GREAT! Hudson plays the organ. I believe the intro had a special name... something like 'Organic' or something. I love the Campbell intro because it's a proper adaptation. Faithful to the original only to the right extent.

jbmando July 21st, 2012, 05:33 PM I am not familiar with the original. I remember it by Three Dog Night. I believe it was the B side to "One." I was not a big The Band fan in my formative years. I really thought that most of their stuff sounded lame and or sloppy.
GERARD9415 July 21st, 2012, 05:35 PM Yes it's Garth's intro on the organ. Campbell plays it on the guitar. It sounds very modal to me.
jbmando July 21st, 2012, 05:42 PM I just listened to the original intro. Sounds pretty much like how Jon Lord (RIP) would have done it. Pretty cool.
Seasicksailor July 21st, 2012, 06:06 PM I never knew Three Dog Night covered it! I just listened to that... it's excellent. I'm not a fan of the fuzzy guitar sound, but I loved the bass!
It took me a while to get into The Band... I almost forced myself because of the Dylan association. Same thing happened with the Grateful Dead. But now, both The Band and the Grateful Dead make it to my top 5 all time favourite bands.
Viejo July 24th, 2012, 11:23 PM The intro was called" The Genetic Method"
jdaunt July 24th, 2012, 11:25 PM It's called The Genetic Method. In live shows Garth would stretch it out for several minutes sometimes. When I saw Levon (RIP) back in March they played it, one of my favorite parts of the show.
jdaunt July 24th, 2012, 11:26 PM The intro was called" The Genetic Method"
You beat me to it!
Seasicksailor July 25th, 2012, 06:01 AM The Genetic Method... indeed! Thanks guys, that was bugging me for a while!
