That solo was a first take ... not only a first take but apparently he wasn't even in the tracking room when the tune started. When the licks come in is when he plugged in and started playing.

He played the lovely slide guitar on
Eric Clapton's "Hello Old Friend".
I think he also was an early sideman to Conway Twitty.
He was a guy who really "served the song".
