Purpose of shielded cable for ground to jack?

Assuming you have a cable with a braided shield around it for ground running through your components and to the output jack. Obviously the inner conductor is going to be hooked up to ground on one end and the grounding on the jack at the other.

What do you guys do with your braided shield at this point? Does it offer any sort of benefit over unshielded cable to ground this as well at both ends? (other than lowering the resistance between the two ends of the cable just by having two bridges)

Basically I don't see why shielded cable is so popular for these applications.

The inner conductor is generally used for "signal" conductor, and the shield is then used for the ground.

Yep. I think there are a few good videos on youtube showing how to use the outer shield for ground. Here's one:

It works well.

Not so much.

Maybe I misunderstand, but the core wire is the hot wire, and the braid serves as the ground as well as a shield, you have it backwards. Wiring is not my strong suit, though.

There is cable with two conductors inside an outside braid, is this what you're referring to? This cable is rarely used, expensive and in this application unnecessary. But if I were using it in the application you're asking about, I would also use the outer braid as shield by connecting it to the ground, (soldered to a pot housing) in the control cavity.

As Fred and others 'splained above, the inner wire is the signal wire, and the outside braid is used as ground and shielding.

make a hole in the outer braid about an inch down from the end and hook the inner wire out through the braid... giving you two workable ends for connection....

the braid is the earth wire and the inner the hot wire....

Maybe not your strong suit, but you've got it exactly right.

Remember that when I ask for wiring help.
