NGD...Caught me by surprise

So I was in Guitar Center...surprise surprise...looking at synthesizers. After I was done, I, of course had to browse the guitars :) Walking around, I saw a nice used 98 green Les Paul Studio with gold hardware, a used Deluxe Tele that the owner put 3 Lollar pickups in...tons of Strats, SGs...all the usual GC flare...but something caught my eye...it was a gaze in the direction of it, a quick turn away and in a milisecond, thought.."what the hell was that"? Looked back at it again and there was this gorgeous.....Gibson Flying V!!!! Yes...you heard me right, I said Flying V!!! I've always like Vs but never any that I could afford...not a fan of ther standard ones you see everywhere.

Anyway...i went to look at the tag...1199.99, Hmmm..not bad. Read the tag further, "Gibson Grace Potter Signature Flying V". I was like..."WHAT!!!" First off, who the he11 is Grace Potter? And why do they finally make a V in a decent price range that I adore the looks of and it's a chic's signature guitar (no offense :) I just thought, oh boy..what is this like some pop chic or something. Well, I sat down and played it. It played wonderfully..no it wasnt "the best playing guitar I ever played" and nor did it "fit my hands like it was meant to be". Nothing dramatic like that...but, it was perfectly set up and in tune and did feel damn nice in my hands.

Sooooooo...I went home (this all happenend yesterday) and the thing wouldnt leave my head. I looked it up and saw it's a pretty brand spanking new model. Ads were posted 6 days ago stating that Gibson unveiled this beauty at the Summer NAMM. As I was Google'ing it, I did see pics of Grace...pretty beautiful!! I still havent listenend to her stuff yet though.

Woke up this morning, and it was still on my mind. Just the looks of this thing...beautiful. While at work, I googled it a couple more times and thought..."Have to have it"! But I dont need, nor can I afford another guitar. So you all know what comes next...."What do I have to trade?" I had plenty of PA stuff to get rid of...and thats what I did. So, shes home with me.

Thats my little story of the day...pics to follow.

But in the meantime, it looks exactly like this.

And Good Lord!!! if this doesnt make you appreciate a Flying V...nothing will!!

Quite a few people give this one a month, but I think you will stick with it, Andy.

Haha...I will get you one as soon as I get them all in the same room. Some stuff here..some at our practice space. I only see my Marshall once a week...but better than lugging it back and forth once a week!

Sweet! That's an awesome looking axe. It's a damn shame Gibson is doing that baked maple thing tho. I have a bit of a hard time getting over that unfortunately. Although the finish coupled with the pickguard and knobs - Fooking awesome!

Grace Potter (and her band) are an awesome pop + r&b fusion. She's a great vocalist and has a pretty good band backing her up. I haven't listened to them much, but whenever I do I enjoy it.

Not dying to have a Flying Vee, but I really like the details on that one.

Very cool!

Thank you for this thread. My brain has been all tangled up lately, and when I first heard about this Grace Potter signature model, I didn't remember her. I just kept picturing Grace JONES (which is scary)!

I'll agree, those are one of the best looking Flying V's Gibson has come out with. As for Grace Potter, she is an incredible vocalist and a beast on the Hammond organ, too. Her older material is more jam rock while her more recent fare is more pop-rock, but very classic rock influenced (I sound like a record label owner listing these sub-genres... she rocks (haha)).

While I tend to lean towards the more subdued/traditional guitar body shapes, I have had a itching curiosity about Flying V's. I recall playing one when I was much younger and found it impossible to sit with unless you put the crotch of the V right on your leg and have it rest almost upright. I wouldn't mind trying out one of the Epiphone Korina '58 style V's at some point.

Yeah, dude! That's cool. Grace is a weird candidate for a signature guitar, since she only plays guitar on a couple of tunes. Her voice is amazing and she's a fine organ and piano player. Excellent songwriter as well as knockout gorgeous.

They are incredibly tight live, and do a killer energetic show. They tour constantly. I highly recommend seeing them if you have the opportunity.

No V in this one, but it's one of my favorite vids on the tube:
