SD '59 and TB5 - Alternate combination?

... To go into a flying v, because the ceramic 500T and 496R are really not doing it for me through my AC30. Bit of a let down because the rest of the guitar is great.

I'll probably go for these ('59 + TB5), but I'd like alternate recommendations - The other combo I was thinking of was 2x Super distortions, or air norton (I think?) + super distortion.

I am looking for high-ish output pickups that actually sound nice, unlike the factory Gibbo ones.

What alternatives can TDPRI give me?

May post NGD documenting this and a tele soon too

A '59 neck and Custom V or 59/Custom Hybrid bridge would be killer in a V. Of course, the PAF/PAF Pro neck and a Super Distortion bridge is classic too.

"For any well-balanced dual-humbucker guitar. Works equally well with maple and rosewood fingerboards."

= I have an ebony board

Doesn't sound bad though. Just have to flick a couple pedals first, and worry about which colour I want.

Play around with the Tone Wizard on Duncan's site and the Pickup Picker on DiMarzio's site. They'll help you pinpoint what you're after.

These would be my first picks!

Bridge 1 : SH-14 Custom 5
Neck 1 : SH-1N '59 Model

Well that's settled.
As for the DiMarzio site :

PAF® 36th Anniversary Bridge
DP223

PAF® 36th Anniversary
DP103

Can't go wrong with either of those pairings from either company, though my experience lies with the 59/C5 combo.

Ebony and maple are pretty similar sounding for the purposes of that statement. What that comment means is that it works well with fingerboards made of bright or warm woods.

I know, I'm just making things difficult. Ish.

Seeing as DiZ's are the cheaper ones (well, mostly), I'll probably go for those. Unless used duncans pop up on trademe for me to snipe. I've never had DiZ's before so I'm sorta looking forward to them.

Howdy,

Duncan's '59s proved too bright in my Maple-necked ES-335. My main amp is a Dr.z Carmen Ghia-a bright amp, also. I switched to a pair of DiMarzios and all is well:
An Air Classic (neck) and 36th anni PAF in the bridge. This warmed up my tone and brought some pleasing mids into the mix. The Air Classic is an especially musical, touch-sensitive P/U. Good luck!

PS: The 36th PAF bridge is a borderline high output P/U and I had to lower it in order to balance it with the more moderate Air Classic. Smoooth bridge P/U.

Yes - the DiMarzio 36th bridge was intended as a replacement for the Virtual Hot PAF (which was a killer pickup as well that pops up cheap on eBay).

36th ann PAF bridge? Why not super distortion?

A bloke on another forum I frequent has suggested a pair of "guitarforce" pickups... Not sure if they're made to order or not but whatever.
I said I'd give the neck one a try, because they are both rather low output PAF style pu's.

In other news, I have listed all my available pedals on teh interweb in the hopes that I can pick up (no pun intended) a super distortion or a custom 5 at some stage for the bridge, if this guitarforce '57 thing works out.

To conclude :
I have settled on super distortion in the bridge and an air classic in the neck.
Now waiting for my other stuff to sell so I can begin the mayhem.
