Truss rod washer stock?

Howdy,

I have a MIM Classic 60's Tele that's had some truss rod troubles. I know some washers were inserted to try and get a better grip on the rod (heel adjustment). I'm going to remove them to try another go at fix using the Stew Mac Rescue kit. Question is... were all the washers I'll find on the rod placed there for the attempted repair or is there a stock truss rod washer that I shouldn't be removing?

Thanks for your help!

There should be a washer there, keeps the nut from binding and digging into the wood.

Just be aware that most of the time the nut stops adjusting it is either stripped, or has come to the end of the threaded portion of the rod. Placing additional washers on the rod will afford an opportunity for more adjustment, provided the threads are intact. The usual problem is soft wood that has crushed inside the hole and allowed the TR nut to go too deep into the neck (thus hitting the end of the threads). Removal of the additional washers will allow the nut to travel farther onto the threads of the TR, and possibly become stuck at the end of the line. This can be the kiss of death- so be careful when you tighten the nut. Leave at least one washer in there to avoid further damage to the base of the hole.
