binding question

Hey guys, I've been doing some research on wood binding because I want to take that step on my next build. Now, I really dig natural wood binding more than plastic binding because to my eyes it just makes it look fancier. Below is a picture of something like what I would like to achieve on the guitar body; maple binding with a thin, black separating stripe.

I realize this is a 2 piece binding but that black strip is so bloody thin I can't even guess where to find something like that. More than likely it'll probably be a black plastic strip with (by my best guess) 2mm of maple binding. Maybe the .022 black strip binding from lmii would be close, or possibly 1/64" black abs? What do you think?

Actually, I think i figured it out. I just ordered some black 1/64" binding to test out, and then I'll find some 2mm maple binding to go outside of it. Should look nice.

Now I just need to learn how to do it....

Bezdez on eBay sells a 'thin' binding. .012"x.235". I think 5 feet is about $1.00. Of course you have to add the shipping, but while you're there, you can get the cool knob making kit.

Hilarious. I just finished reading your thread so it all makes sense.

If you want to be an expert on binding you have to read Buckocaster's authoritative comprehensive in depth book on the subject. It's cleverly disguised as an emeraldcaster thread but you'll find it. That's where I learned how to do binding.

Do you have a bending iron? 2mm figured maple will be okay for all but the tight curves ... where it will frustrate the heck out of ya!

You can bend it with a steam jet from a boiling pot on the stove if you don't have an iron. Get twice as much as you need and practice - it's not too expensive.

Actually, come to think of it, 2mm will probably be fine to bend without cracking.
