Few could tear up the Tele (often a Deluxe) like that guy. He had an amazing way of creating really happy riffs, with little jazz flourishes thrown in for flavor.

Matched up with Mike Watt on bass and George Hurley on drums, they were simply one of the best trios of all time.

The Minutemen were the Hendrix Experience for my generation!

Everyone should give them an honest listen, Double Nickles on the Dime, or watch the documentry film "We Jam Econo" currently on Netflix.

Agreed!
A smoking hot girlfriend of mine, I mean georgeous, turned me on to them. It just didn't seem congruent at the time. They were so sweaty and aggressive, she was so classy and soft, wearing diamonds, gold and couture, but she had a major thing for D. Boon. Anyway, Double Nickels on the Dime is one of my top 12 records, and D. Boon played a Tele at a time when very few guys in that scene were playing Teles. Dave Pirner was another one. That girl also turned me on to the Butthole Surfers.

Really nice to see this thread. SST Records kinda ruled my universe back in the mid/late '80s. SO much good music came from the SST roster. Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Black Flag, Dino Jr., Screaming Trees, Gone, Sonic Youth, and the mighty Husker Du. Man, it was fun being a twenty-something indie rock freak. Cheap beer, flannel shirts, and blaring guitars, what's not to like??

Glad I'm not the only one who recognizes this! Today we are in the car and Little Man With a Gun comes on and my wife looks at me an she says, "It's really amazing that such a delicate sound can come out of such a big burly guy..."

They were such a great trio. I wish i could be in a group that was so cohesive but at the same time respected and allowed each other space.

Much love for D.

Been seeing Watt for years. Prior to his health issues and stint with the Stooges, he would tour with bands doing covers from the Minutemen's influences and the SST era bands. So great to see him keep that stuff alive. Their band could be my life.

On Watt's "Contemplating the Engine Room", Nels Cline played D Boon's guitar. That introduced me to Nels and I'll forever be a fan of his.

I remember seeing The Minutemen at the Mabuhay Gardens back in the spring of '81. After their show I saw D. Boon come off the stage and get in the audience to watch the next band. I thought that was the coolest thing ever.

I was a teen in high school, not a twenty-something in the late 80s, but other than that, all this applies to me perfectly... ;)
I guess at least 25% of my vinyl album collection is made up of SST records....

Whenever Watt talks about about Boon, it's obvious he's still hugely missed on so many levels---as a player, as a writer, as an inspiration, as a human being, and as a friend.

Thanks, BP.

I tried the Youtube tags but didn't know what part of the link to put in between them to make it work. Cheers.

urizen,

Watt is an amazingly sweet and humble human being. He will forever dedicate everything he's ever gotten out of music to D Boon and never take credit for his own abilities and influence.

If you get a chance, get a hold of the Watt/Hurley duet from Long Beach, 2003.

Right there with you. I got to see a lot of SST acts as they blew through the Midwest in dangerously rickety vans.

Some of the best shows I ever saw. Heck, I saw Black Flag on the My War tour (and then a year later when they were touring Slip It In) along with 2 or 3 other SST acts. Cost $6.

A band I was in was supposed to open for Minutemen in Oklahoma once but it didn't materialize and I ended up never getting to see them live (although I saw fIREHOSE several times.)

Also a huge Meat Puppets fan, as well as some lesser-known SST bands like Saccharine Trust and Painted Willie.

Minutemen is one of the bands I like to put on for people who think all punk rock was just snotty screaming over two badly-played chords by no-talent kids.

D. Boon was a fine guitarist and Hurley/Watts are one of THE greatest rhythm sections in all of rock and roll.

I remember reading an interview with Mike Watt a few years back and he was recalling how when they first got together he and D. didn't even have a clue about how to tune their instruments. According to Watt they actually at first thought it was down to personal preference:

"I like it when my strings are wound up pretty tight so they don't have a lot of give."

"Yeah? I like mine really loose so they bend all over the place."
