tele-rain July 15th, 2012, 11:05 AM In my ever growing quest for awesome music of time past...I now have gotten interested in getting some Beach Boys stuff. I'm usually not fond of "best ofs", but I'm not sure I'd like all of it to start getting the albums as a whole. Its especially confusing on iTunes because it seems lots of older CDs have been paired together.
Suggestions?
Edit - I started with Surfin' Safari and Surfin' USA, which seems to be two albums on one CD. However, I just got a weird error that Ten Little Indians couldn't be downloaded...anyone ever have that happen from iTunes??
Skully July 15th, 2012, 12:28 PM I think the first few albums are only essential for hardcore fans. Just get the "greatest hits" packages to cover those years.
BTW, the new album is surprisingly good -- very good, as a matter of fact. It's my album of the moment.

mal paso July 15th, 2012, 04:35 PM
I thought everybody liked Pet Sounds?
Tim Armstrong July 15th, 2012, 04:42 PM I can't imagine anyone not profoundly digging Pet Sounds. It's just perfect.
Tim
joelstrummer July 15th, 2012, 04:47 PM I always really liked the Wild Honey album. And definitely yes to Pet Sounds.

I liked Wild Honey, but the only song off of Pet Sounds that I like is "Wouldn't it be Nice."

Caroline, No is just heartbreaking!
And of course - God Only Knows is one of pop history's gems.
And bossking7: we're from different plants I guess ...
The only song I'm not too crazy about on Pet Sounds is Sloop John B.
mal paso July 15th, 2012, 05:40 PM C'mon, TMan, Sloop John B is great!
It seems like it sticks out like a sore thumb at first, but upon closer listen(IMO), fits on the album perfectly, i.e. the nostalgia theme
tele-rain July 15th, 2012, 06:06 PM After my downloading debacle, I haven't gone further yet. But thanks for all the input! I will certainly report back when I give them a listen

I don't know ..... It's one of a very few Beach Boys songs I've never liked - but then it's not really a Beach Boys song at all, is it ...
Surf's Up on the other hand is fantastic!
tele-rain July 16th, 2012, 09:34 AM Ok...I breezed through the "20 Good Vibrations" on my commute. My first impression is that the vocals are way up, which im assuming is due to wanting to showcase the expert harmonies. I dig that, but I want to hear the instruments too. This is only first listen though, so im sure my ears will start picking up everything else as I go along.
I find myself singing the wrong lyrics in my head, as many beach Boy songs were used as commercials back in my childhood (Sunkist soda mostly, I believe) so it will be good to finally get the real lyrics embedded in my brain :o)
klasaine July 16th, 2012, 11:46 AM The new record reminds me a lot of 'LA Light' http://www.amazon.com/L-A-Light-Album-Mlps-Beach/dp/B001B0G5WK/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_13 and 'the Beach Boys 85' http://www.amazon.com/Beach-Boys-85-Mlps/dp/B001B0G5XY/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_20 . Two great albums that were totally slagged when they came out.
*My fave comp collection is 'the Beach Boys: Endless Summer' ... it's the one we all had in the mid 70's http://www.amazon.com/Endless-Summer-Beach-Boys/dp/B000002UB9/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1342453565&sr=1-1&keywords=beachboys+endless+summer

I've always liked "Getcha Back," the hit single from the 1985 album. I'll have to check those out.
bowman July 16th, 2012, 02:22 PM To me, the best Beach Boys record is Greatest Hits Volume 2 - and I'm a Pet Sounds lover also. But Vol. 2 has most of my favorites on it, and if I was forced at gunpoint to pick only one BB album, that would be it.
hekawi July 16th, 2012, 02:32 PM My fave comp collection is 'the Beach Boys: Endless Summer' ... it's the one we all had in the mid 70's ]
the cd version of added "Good Vibrations"....so if you have "Endless Summer" and "Pet Sounds"....that makes for some fine listening.
Doug 54 July 16th, 2012, 06:05 PM Under-the radar Individual BB Songs:
60's:
She's Not the Little Girl (I Once Knew). GREAT pre-Pet Sounds orchestration!!
The Warmth of the Sun
Please Let Me Wonder
Girl Don't Tell Me (Byrds folkie like)
Vegetables
Wonderful
I'm Bugged at My Ol Man (Brian on Murry, pre- breakdown)
Break Away
Dance, Dance,Dance
70's
THis Whole World (OMG a great song!)
Forever
Sail On Sailor
Surf's Up (actually a 60's song in the vault)
California Saga
Wishing You Were Here w/Chicago
so much more I cant think of!!!
Skully July 16th, 2012, 06:41 PM Girl Don't Tell Me (Byrds folkie like)
I recently worked this one up to play & sing on acoustic. Unlike most Beach Boy songs, no harmonies! (I love the harmonies, but recreating them is another matter.)
slauson slim July 16th, 2012, 08:56 PM Disney Girls
Marcella
Please Let Me Wonder
Do It Again
In My Room
Don't Talk, Put Your Head On My Shoulder
DrumBob July 16th, 2012, 10:36 PM Pet Sounds
(somebody had to say it!)
Exactly right. Brian Wilson's masterpiece that influenced The Beatles.
ravindave_3600 July 16th, 2012, 11:26 PM Pet Sounds? I love its best songs - the ones already mentioned - and hate the others.
Telemarkman July 17th, 2012, 03:15 AM This is Musical Heaven to me - both the song and the singer:
X57zvtaOlvE
metalmayhem July 17th, 2012, 08:23 AM Pet sounds, Surfs Up and Sunflower. Good place to start
klasaine July 17th, 2012, 11:15 AM I've always liked "Getcha Back," the hit single from the 1985 album. I'll have to check those out.
Production wise it's very 'mid 80s' but Brian's on a lot of it and most of the songs are (IMO) really good.
*A few of you mentioned the tune 'Please Let Me Wonder' (B-side of Do You Wanna Dance) - that's one of my fave BB songs! That tune and 'I Can Hear Music' are two that I forget about a lot.
Doug 54 July 17th, 2012, 11:40 AM "I Can Hear Music" with Carl's lead vocal is as lush a Spector production as any ear candy fer sure!!
beatup78 July 17th, 2012, 08:00 PM Pet Sounds, Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surfs Up, Carl and The Passions/So Tough, and Holland.
Today and California Days..and Nights are also excellent productions, but the 8 on the top paragraph contain some of the most magnificent recordings ever made from all the songwriters and singers in the band. It might not all grab you at once, but over time, you can't beat 'em.
