i absolutely love this

azcZBnEwpFc

do you feel it's great, alright, or turns you off? and naturally if so, why

It's a fun version - especially when you know the original. If I hadn't had an old relationship with the Shad's version, I doubt that I would've listened to it twice. Brian is a great player though.

I love all the synchronized movements and glossy suits.
The song itself is alright, both versions

It's not great but it's 'fun'?

You've both hit a nail on the head

personally, i think i like fun more than great

Can't hold a candle to the original. Horribly cheesy sound and he didn't do a favor to the repetitive riff by playing it even longer.
Fun is a good word to describe the original, or charming.

The Brian May version is a hideous, dog's breakfast.

I thought they were both great, two different eras two different interpretations.

I like the covers just fine, but it's just not the same without the distinctive whammy work.

Speaking of Hank Marvin, can anyone recommend a Shadows album? I know that Marvin, as one of the first major UK Strat players, was a big influence on one of my all-time favorite guitarists -- Mark Knopfler* -- but my Shadows knowledge is woefully limited. What should I listen to?

*I think Hank was a pretty big influence on my other rock hero, David Gilmour, so I'm doubly interested in the Shadows -- and doubly embarrassed that I haven't heard more of them.

I quite like Dr. May's take on the tune (N.B. not "song"), which captures a lot of the spirit of the original and adds a leavening of May-isms. Not so the IMO rather horrid Ronson version.

BTW, I'm at present looking at being both "Bruce" and "Cliff" ("Briff"?) in a Shads-type tribute band that's re-forming. Felt a bit of a twerp at my age singing "The Young Ones" at a first rehearsal last week, but it and the rest of what we ran through (including "FBI") sounded good. Seems promising so far.

Yeah, to me it's not about originality, as i said re-invention

nobody invented anything

Cover songs are an interesting dilemma-you have to show respect for the song by copying enough of it for identification purposes yet still bring something new to the table-else why do it at all? I think Mick's take succeeds more on finding the balance-more about the song-whereas Brian's is a bit more self-directed. But that could be a live band vs. studio thing too.

Without cover tunes you wouldn't have folk music or blues grass, would you ?

yep. the same thing can't be done twice, even if you wanted to, that's why tape recorders, photocopiers etc, were invented; to prove even a machine can't do it. The nature of art is to influence, not to reproduce, for want of a better way of saying whatever i'm trying to say.

& Great clip Chez
