If I hadn't had an old relationship with the Shad's version, I doubt that I would've listened to it twice. Brian is a great player though. n-OgRpH7o3s fuzzbender July 14th, 2012, 04:42 PM Tear it to shreds, why not  Tele? thorton077 July 14th, 2012, 04:45 PM It's a fun version - especially when you know the original. If I hadn't had an old relationship with the Shad's version, I doubt that I would've listened to it twice. Brian is a great player though. n-OgRpH7o3s I love all the synchronized movements and glossy suits. The song itself is alright, both versions fuzzbender July 14th, 2012, 04:48 PM It's not great but it's 'fun'? You've both hit a nail on the head personally, i think i like fun more than great Voodoo Dust July 14th, 2012, 05:08 PM Can't hold a candle to the original. Horribly cheesy sound and he didn't do a favor to the repetitive riff by playing it even longer. Fun is a good word to describe the original, or charming. chezdeluxe July 14th, 2012, 05:16 PM The Brian May version is a hideous, dog's breakfast. strat56 July 14th, 2012, 06:58 PM I thought they were both great, two different eras two different interpretations. AndyLowry July 15th, 2012, 12:55 PM Pretty good for an astrophysicist. SteveO July 15th, 2012, 01:16 PM This is by far my favorite version of FBI.Raw Rock and Roll by a true Master. Speaking of Hank Marvin, can anyone recommend a Shadows album? I know that Marvin, as one of the first major UK Strat players, was a big influence on one of my all-time favorite guitarists -- Mark Knopfler* -- but my Shadows knowledge is woefully limited. What should I listen to? *I think Hank was a pretty big influence on my other rock hero, David Gilmour, so I'm doubly interested in the Shadows -- and doubly embarrassed that I haven't heard more of them. Tony474 July 18th, 2012, 12:00 PM I quite like Dr. May's take on the tune (N.B. not "song"), which captures a lot of the spirit of the original and adds a leavening of May-isms. Not so the IMO rather horrid Ronson version. BTW, I'm at present looking at being both "Bruce" and "Cliff" ("Briff"?) in a Shads-type tribute band that's re-forming. Felt a bit of a twerp at my age singing "The Young Ones" at a first rehearsal last week, but it and the rest of what we ran through (including "FBI") sounded good. Seems promising so far. fuzzbender July 18th, 2012, 05:45 PM Thanks Tony, beautifully put Yeah, to me it's not about originality, as i said re-invention nobody invented anything chezdeluxe July 18th, 2012, 11:21 PM You may enjoy this. Song starts at 2.07. Note the thumb over the top A note played By Hank and Skunk. I dig stuff like that. elihu July 20th, 2012, 07:32 AM Cover songs are an interesting dilemma-you have to show respect for the song by copying enough of it for identification purposes yet still bring something new to the table-else why do it at all? I think Mick's take succeeds more on finding the balance-more about the song-whereas Brian's is a bit more self-directed. But that could be a live band vs. studio thing too. The nature of art is to influence, not to reproduce, for want of a better way of saying whatever i'm trying to say. & Great clip Chez |
