Hi- and a quick question too!

Hi guys, greetings from Milton Keynes, UK.

Decided I had to join after lurking for some time .
Just reading a recent thread about tele weights. I've been considering trading mine (details below) in for some time, it is very heavy and I've recently been confined to a wheelchair and playing sitting down, due to an after effect of cancer.
So the question is, if I get rid of it and buy a modern tele, maybe a Mexican, am I going to be anywhere near as happy in terms of action and tone?
I'm primarily an acoustic guitarist/mandolinist/fiddler and relatively inexperienced on electric guitar (despite my years!) Now playing rock in a pub band and loving it.

OK so my beloved instrument is a 1978 American tele. Originally cherry red, I think, but stripped to natural wood by a previous owner. It weighs 9.6lb (4.5kg) according to my missus, using the bathroom scales. That is heavy and doing my back in! I've had it 14 years. Should I keep it or move it on?

Sorry if I should have posted my question separate from my greeting!

Welcome! Fortunately, some stores will weigh guitars before sale. If 2 lbs., or .9 kg will make a big difference to your comfort-consider a lighter guitar?

Unfortunately, few of us visit the Welcome section. Please post your question in the Telecaster discussion forum for more responses.

Thanks for coming in.

On the replacement question, just play before you buy. Action can usually be adjusted. If not, a pro set-up will do the trick. I'd budget for a full set up anyway, make the new one the best it can be.

Action can be set up to how you like it by an expirenced luither. But I have let a few guitars go that I later regretted because at the time I thought they were too heavy, not the right pickup, and so on. If you don't have to get rid of it before getting a new one I say hold on to it. If after a while you still feel like selling it then go ahead. I have just regretted it more than once.

By the way..Welcome!!

Thanks for all your replies. I may already have my answer. We had a band practice this morning, the rehearsal room is attached to a really good local guitar shop, and just co-incidenatlly my mate had decided to stay behind afterwards to try out a few teles! So cos he was giving me a lift anyway I took advantage.
The advice on mine was 'hang on to it' it might be worth 3-5k squid but it's not a seller's market right now. They bought out a selection of teles and I fell for a Chinese pre-owned one; 3 pickups inc, humbucker at bridge with a coil split switch. Not sure what you call this model, but at £299 how can I fail? Plays nicely, and won't upset Mrs Adams! I have plenty of money in paypal from selling gear which will cover it.
My mate bought a brand new Standard sunburst - delicious. He got a great knock down price too- list = £1100, he paid £850.

EDIT- discover it's a Modern Player Tele Plus
