Initial disclaimer....I don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of the Byrds/Clarence White discography that many of you do so I'll only mention a couple and wait to see the ones I miss...

With that in mind....here's the examples that impacted me when I first heard them and opened up the vast possibilities (I'll get to the '90's Glasers later)

"Peaceful Easy Feeling" Bernie Leadon (the classic 2d-3d resolution bend)

"Dark End of the Street" Bob Warford (the slow dramatic bend)

"The Great Pretender" Warford (the fast country bend)

"Lover of the Bayou" Clarence White (the first Clarence tune on which I heard and appreciated the bender, a great album first cut, on the edge of the time signature)

"Sweet Dreams" Will Ray (w/ Hipshot first seen at the Ronnie Mack Palomino Barn Dance in the pre-Hellecaster '80's)

Looking forward to hearing more selections.....especiallly lesser known examples.

It's tough to limit it to 5....there's so many more I like as well as these..

There's a theme here...either Clarence White or Bob Warford...

1) Tulsa County - Clarence White
2) Lover of the Bayou - Clarence White
3) Willin - Bob Warford (w/ Linda Ronstadt)
4) This Wheels on Fire - Clarence White
5) Sweet Mama - Bob Warford (w/ Robb Strandlund)

Very Honorable mention...
5b) Peaceful Easy Feeling - Bernie Leadon
5c) No Souvenirs - David Nelson (of the New Riders of the Purple Sage)

"Home of the Blues" by Gib Gilbeau with that classic intro by Clarence White.

Will Ray's section of the Hellecaster's "Orange Blossom Special", the dude's superhuman!

"Meet in the Middle" by Diamond Rio with that great Glaser work by Jimmy Olander.

A little off the wall but I've always admired Buck Trent's electric banjo work which featured both B & G benders. Check out the backup work on things like "Carrol County Accident" and/or "Howdy, Neighbor Howdy". He was way ahead of his time and also ahead of the others....JH in Va.

Does anyone have a album called PACIFIC Steel COMPANY?
I was working in ca. in the early 90's and met a D.J. that a nice collection of late 60's early 70's country-rock material. He ran me a bunch off to cassette.I was playing pedal steel and that was one of the ones he sent me.The album is all west coast steel players Tom Brumley,J.D.mainess,Red Rhodes,Sneaky Pete and Al Perkins.I guess what I'm getting at is on one of Al perkins tunes this guitar solo kicks in and it blew me away and still does today its got to be clarance and some of his best work I've ever herd. I dont have any credits on the players so if anyone knows drop me a line.

I'd have to submit: "Sweet Dreams", "Mad Cows At Ease", "Shenandoah", "Santa Cruizin'", and the first solo on "5 Minutes To Spare" - ala Will Ray. I would have suggested "Hellecaster Stomp", as it is one of my favorites, but there is just a little bender useage on that one, at the end of Will's solo(I think). Heck, anything that guy plays rips up a dang Hipshot! I just took a fancy to these specific cuts!

"Pullstring" -- Duane Wong/Joe Goldmark!!! On Joe Goldmark's album "Pickin My Pleasures". This is my #1, all time, bender tune. Bender & steel going head to head. The Warford/Sneaky Pete things on "Heart like A Wheel" also have never been equaled. There is also an album by Chris Hillman/Herb Pederson with Warford all over it. I think the title is "Lonesome Feeling" not sure, I copied it on cassette and lent the album long ago..................... Magnificient playing!

Hello Brian; I would be the last one to disagree with you, and these two aformentioned players are no doubt deciples of Clarence. I do have that album, and it is of course, incredible. I have everything Clarence ever did. There are however, cool bender licks other players came up with. These two players are fine examples. If you can't find "pullstring", I'll get you a copy.

It's funny, but my first introduction to Clarence White was on an obscure Arlo Guthrie Album called "Running Down the Road". I had "stolen" (uh, I mean borrowed indefinitely) the album from a female singer in a country band I was playing in.

I had lost the cover, but remembered that James Burton had played on it, so I assumed he was playing all the cool guitar parts. I immediately went out and started buying James Burton albums only to discover later that Burton played dobro, and Clarence White was doing most of the guitar parts.

I learned all Clarence's solos note for note manually by using my fingers, and then eventually I experimented with a mini slide to cover those licks I could never do with my fingers. "Running Down the Road" didn't have that many "hot" licks, but it had this really cool southern drawl to the licks that just floored me.

It wasn't until many years later when I moved to LA that I learned that Clarence White had been using a B-Bender. That was 1983 when I met Dave Borisoff who had just invented a new toy called the Hipshot. All of a sudden I put 2 and 2 together and relearned the licks from that Arlo Guthrie album with a bender, and a giant light bulb went off in my head. I finally "got it" and have been using Hipshots ever since. And I owe it all to that Arlo Guthrie album, which rearranged my whole thinking about intervals and chord positions. And got me using mini slides.

Buckaroo, Clarence White- out of my league.
Sweet Dreams, Will Ray- beautiful, also out of my league.
Blame the Vain, Keith Gattis- simple & basic... but very well executed.

I'll throw some songs that aren't country or country rock into the mix:

"All Of My Love", Led Zep
"Unforgiven II", Metallica

And I don't remember too much bending on it (which might be because I'm so tired right now), but Clarence's work on all versions of "This Wheels on Fire" is what made me get all obsessive about him.

Boy Don, How do you mind-read from Alaska to New York! I can't tell you how long I sat in front of my screen watching "Playboy After Dark" on youtube trying to get that intro perfect! I pretty much have it. I remember sitting in front of my B/W TV holding a cassette recorder---also that outdoor thing when the Byrds are playing with Earl Scruggs and his sons.
