New Gibson Day! LP Jr Special

Man I've been trying to avoid spending $$ on a gibson for years - I don't make money for playing and am pretty much a living room rock star. I did have a gibson faded flying V but sold it when I switched to bass for awhile.

Ever since then I've been about "finding that expensive guitar feel/tone in a cheapie" :) I've been fighting electronics the entire time not to mention fretwork.

Well I saw GC was having their 13% off sale and thought I'd go check things out. Found this very reasonably priced LP (well, "reasonably" as far a gibsons go!) Jr Special with P-90's. Got the nitro finish which isn't a big deal for me - when it comes off it comes off.

This guitar sounds so good, and play so nice. Light but not too light. It's got a fantastic setup right off the rack and nice low action. Decent binding around the neck. Not a buzz to be found. And those P-90's....well, just wow. Excellent vintage tone.

It was $750 before the coupon, I walked out with it for $696. I played several import guitars before parting with the dough and none of them sounded or played as well as this one. I had to have it, and have it I do :)

I just got the same guitar today! In Satin vintage burst too. I agree, the tone and playability is outstanding for the price(you got a better deal than me). Happy NGD, enjoy it!

Nice. They are plecking every thing at Gibson now and it shows. I have 3 plecked Gibsons and they all were set up great from the factory. Very little tweaking!!
Nothing says rock and roll more then 2 P90's

I just rewired mine to the typical modern wiring with orange drops (my personal fav) and it made an amazing difference. I don't know what they had going on in there before but comparatively it was tonally dead. I really thought it sounded good before too, but it really is no comparison. I would highly recommend it. I wish I had a pic of what it looked like before so maybe someone in the know could shed some light, but my guess is they wired it this way to lessen some of the typical p90 hum. But by doing that they blanketed the true tonal character of these pickups. -just a guess-

Reproduction Sprague Orange Drops, or NOS, or etc...? I recently purchased a Gibby LP JR. Special. It was always my intent to rewire the guitar, just haven't got around to it yet.

I installed (as I do with all of my LP's) a Gotoh lightweight (aluminum) tailpiece. I then top wrap the tailpiece so that I can slam it against the body. This, although disputed on the internet, makes a huge tonal difference! Plus it looks better (more vintage correct at least) than the stock Gibson pot-metal piece of junk that they include on their guitars. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_tailpieces/Gotoh_Aluminum_Stop_Tailpiece.html

Repro's. I'm sure there are better out there but I'm happy with the tone I get from those. I like to wrap the tailpiece as well, I'll have to look into the aluminum ones.

The slab bodied no-nonsense Gibsons have always floated my boat.

Juniors, Melody Makers, Specials, they are all good IMO.

You can keep your flame tops, exotic binding, inlays, excess weight etc.The simple no-frills Gibsons are the spirit of rock IMO.

Those Gibby Specials look really nice.

What is the neck profile like on these, please?

Gibson's "SlimTaper" neck profile. In other words a 50's baseball bat neck with the middle of the curve sanded flat. At least that's how it feels to me. It's my only gripe with the guitar. Give me a fat 50s neck and I love it. Give me a slim 60s neck and I can handle that too. This flat spot down the middle of the neck just feels bad.

PS. I own one, and played 5 others while searching.

Mine is thinner than my sg standard, and a bit chunkier than a slim 60's. I really like the thin satin finish too.
