I am getting a '72 thinline reissue and will be getting a custom pickguard made that will fit normal sized humbuckers. My question is this, does the '72 thinline come with a .06 in pickguard or .09 in pickguard? I'd like to match the dimensions of whatever is on there. Also, do tele's come with matte or solid gloss pickguards? Not sure which to get. Obviously one is shiny and one isn't. I just want to get what looks normal on a tele. so basically, .06 or .09? and solid gloss or matte? The pickguard will be black.

The stock pickguards generally have a gloss finish but some prefer matte. It's up to you. Are you ordering a single ply black or a three ply black/white/black? A three ply would be thicker.

I feel like the shine of a gloss finish black on a thinline would take away the attention from the body...so I think i'm going to go matte...
As for single ply or three ply, I don't know what to get. I have both options available. I understand that one is thicker, but is one easier to play or something?

With the three ply you will see the white ply in the middle showing along the edges where the pickguard is cut at an angle. It's just optical preference.

Really? No three ply are solid black on the edges?

No, the three plys are black-white-black so the white in the middle will be there along the edges, though it's only a narrow line.

The whole idea of the three ply is that it's a sandwich of two colors which is why it's called a three ply. You can probably get a single ply black in either thickness but typically the thinner .06 would be more practical. You have less edge thickness. An .09 with an angled edge would look kind of thick on a Thinline so if it was mine I'd probably do the .06 with a straight edge like those you'd find on a Tele with a plain blackguard. The thickness has no affect on playability .

I put a black/creme .09" 5-ply on my Thinline. Perfect fit and excellent finish

Standard for a Tele of that era would be a 3-ply .09" glossy pickguard.
WD Music Products has this pickguard in black for $40, with a $10 upcharge for standard size humbuckers. Their products are excellent and have the most consistent fit I've used.
