I remember this well. At the time, the flanger effect was not hear very much, apart from Hendrix, of course. Ernie Isley rightfully received a lot of attention for this, including an article in GP. His playing is very melodic, and I can't offhand think of any other radio hits that featured a guitar solo so prominently. I love the way he bends, then introduces a little vibrato at the top. His intonation was perfect when he did this. On the downside, the flanging seems to suck out a lot of the guitar's nuances, and thus can seem a little mechanical. But this was a fairly new sound at the time which I think people responded to very positively.
