It's an Old Kraftsman, made by Kay for Spiegel catalog company. That one looks to be from the early to mid-sixties. Used to own one similar that was branded Kay - really nice sounding pickup, 30" scale, played it through high school.

I was going to guess Kay or Harmony...or something cloned from them. The small tuning machines are a clue. I have never seen a 4-on-a-side model.
Here is a Harmony from the '60's. IT used to have the small tuning machines.
It has Schallers now...along with a custom-built hardshell case to accommodate the bigger machines. IT also sports a humbucking Seymour Duncan Rickenbacker type of pickup these days.

Definetly a KAY, very distinctive "hatchet" headstock-kind of like a Kay Holloywood bass

most Kay basses had the "Kelvenator" headstock & rounded not a florentine bout so it's not a very common one. Found this one that's similar-they claim it to be a 50's vintage

and a pretty good match

Is the pickup in that Kay/Old Kraftsman bass stock. IT looks like a Dano lipstick tube p-up that has an 'arranged' mounting to my eye

Kay?

Made in Chicago. Some models sold through big catalog retailers like Sears, Montgomery-Wards, Spiegel. They made a lot of archtops during the big band era and the 50's then got into electrics. Looks like those basses used a similar body to the archtops.

Simple stuff and not all that expensive or that highly thought of compared to Fender but pretty rare these days. A Dano/Silvertone I had years ago that I bought for $40 was selling for $990 through Hello Music a month or so ago.

Just a hint on these old basses with the small tuners-oil or lube them well before you try to turn the keys...the shafts are very thin and they have a habit of breaking off in your hand because the open gears sometimes are jammed solid with old grease and dirt. Clean the, lube them and try to loosen the screw before turning the key, and think seriously about replacing them completely with solid, modern tuners...

The old Kay Kraftsman and Harmony hollowbody basses are very usable and have their own kind of tone...they are neat basses, and are now collectable as well as playable.

Just treat them nice.
