DanielDG July 10th, 2012, 12:35 PM Hello everyone,
I'm a long time reader, first time poster:lol:
This is my first Fender style build. After building a Les Paul (http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/luthiers-corner/79633-first-build-les-paul.html) and Flying V (http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/luthiers-corner/148393-number-two-flying-v.html), a friend asked if I would be interested to build him a Jazz Bass. Since he’s providing all the parts, I agreed!
I used preeb’s thread (http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/169606-1960-jazzbass-build.html) as a guide. The pictures and information were really helpful.
Specs:
Body: American Red Alder
Neck: Michigan Maple
Fingerboard: Michigan Maple OR Indian Rosewood (he hasn’t decided yet, most likely Maple though)
Fingerboard inlays: MOP Blocks
Pickup routes: ‘double fit’ Jazz Neck + P-bass at the neck position, Jazz Bass bridge pu at the bridge position
->The pickguard will be slightly adjusted to cover the P-Bass pu cavity.
Hardware: Leo Quan BadassIII bridge, Hipshot tuners, bone nut.
Finish: Body: Olympic White, nitrocellulose lacquer. Neck: clear nitrocellulose lacquer.
I bought the Jazz Bass plans drawn by Jason Lollar at the MIMF (http://www.mimf.com) (it seems that these aren’t offered any longer).
Here we go:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-BF4XZMZP.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-BF4XZMZP.jpg)
Copied the body part and glued it on a piece of MDF
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-NAS8ZHKW.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-NAS8ZHKW.jpg)
Cut the template using the bandsaw, it was quite cold back in February!(that’s ice on the window)
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-HVMJ3RJ3.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-HVMJ3RJ3.jpg)
Template all finished
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-P8W7Z86U.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-P8W7Z86U.jpg)
Body wood
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-TLMBOH3N.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-TLMBOH3N.jpg)
Body rough cut
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-CG8XWEOH.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-CG8XWEOH.jpg)
Routed. I then rounded the edges using a 1/2” roundover bit.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-NTUQTULH.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-NTUQTULH.jpg)
Back
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-GGMRZUSN.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-GGMRZUSN.jpg)
I connected the roundovers at the neckpocket sides and the rest of the edges by hand
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-YDBUSDC6.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-YDBUSDC6.jpg)
The belly carve: it was almost finished in this pic.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-P8B4KWX6.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-P8B4KWX6.jpg)
Neckpocket routed
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-4DYLMS7M.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-4DYLMS7M.jpg)
I then made the neck-template and made sure it fitted
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-B7VSNTRS.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-B7VSNTRS.jpg)
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-YNMVAVQE.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-YNMVAVQE.jpg)
The neck blank. It originally was very roughly milled, bowed, twisted etc. This is after planing it using my jointer/planer and finishing by hand using StewMac’s fret level beam with some 60grit sandpaper (finished with 100grit).
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-3BYCUOQP.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-3BYCUOQP.jpg)
Attaching the trussrod-channel template. I’m using StewMac’s HotRod (24”)
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-UYB4FIYO.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-UYB4FIYO.jpg)
After routing the trussrod-channel, I drilled the hole to adjust the trussrod.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-ODXGAO3V.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-ODXGAO3V.jpg)
I made sure the hole had enough margin, since the allen nut was welded on crooked
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-ALBV4UFJ.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-ALBV4UFJ.jpg)
I then routed out the neck. Here you can see how crooked the nut was welded on. No problem though, everything works fine.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-EE3MS4UG.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-EE3MS4UG.jpg)
The headstock. I used a PDF I found here that contains several J- and P-bass headstocks.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-XZZ3DRFX.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-XZZ3DRFX.jpg)
This is my woodstorage closet, LOL:lol::twisted:. Some Padauk, Wengé, Spanish Cedar and Honduran/African Mahogany are waiting to become guitars (I store my fingerboard blanks in another compartment of that closet)
And this is where I’m currently at:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-ABINMDNF.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-ABINMDNF.jpg)
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-VCULBUWR.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-VCULBUWR.jpg)
Next thing on the list is planing + thicknessing the fretboard, and sawing the fretslots. The inlays still have to arrive, but as soon as they do I’ll rout + chisel the cavities.
Daniel
tklaavo July 10th, 2012, 01:37 PM Looks great! Your previous builds look really pro - quite an achievement to build a Les Paul first and do it as well as you have done. This should be a piece of cake now..
Canadianbreed July 10th, 2012, 06:43 PM That's going to be a great looking bass, great work.
Bill
guitarbuilder July 10th, 2012, 07:05 PM Nice job. I did my first couple of jazz bass bodies a couple of months ago myself.
glen smith July 10th, 2012, 07:57 PM You are off to a great start!
melomanarock July 11th, 2012, 10:23 PM It's looking really good. But please don't put MOP blocks in a maple fretboard.. they look like cr*p to me.
DanielDG July 12th, 2012, 10:18 AM Thanks guys:mrgreen:
I have thicknessed the fretboard and I have also cut the slots:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-C7LDRQJB.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-C7LDRQJB.jpg)
I used StewMacs fret slotting jig + the Japanese saw. Took like ten minutes, works like a charm!
I actually like MOP inlaid into Maple.. Too late to change, inlays are on their way:twisted:
As soon as the inlays arrive, I'll inlay them. My friend bought them at Andy Depaule, per recommendation. They left about a week ago in Vietnam, should arrive in approx. 1,5 weeks.
To line up the fretboard during glue up, I'm gonna use a tenon-mortise type of thing to fixate the fretboard. That's why I left the nut end of the blank quite long.
Daniel
DanielDG July 16th, 2012, 10:01 AM Inlays arrived earlier than expected:mrgreen:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-6CR7I4HO.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-6CR7I4HO.jpg)
Now it's time to inlay them.
AirBagTester July 16th, 2012, 10:16 AM Looks like it's coming along nicely! I like the inlays you picked.
DanielDG July 18th, 2012, 01:10 PM Looks like it's coming along nicely! I like the inlays you picked.
Thanks!
The inlays are in!
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-V6JCNNEN.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-V6JCNNEN.jpg)
I first routed out the cavities, staying away from the outline. I scored the outline using a Stanley razor blade. I used StewMacs mini routerbase + one of their downcut spiral bits. Worked really well.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-ZDY8FQIZ.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-ZDY8FQIZ.jpg)
I used chisels to get right to the line.
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-CLHL84S6.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-CLHL84S6.jpg)
The result
I then inlaid the inlays. After this I radiused the board and I recut the fretslots using a depth stop.

http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-PCZLBZWJ.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-PCZLBZWJ.jpg)
They look nice, I'm happy!
Next: gluing fretboard to neck.
Canadianbreed July 18th, 2012, 05:54 PM Very very nice work indeed Daniel, keep it up.

DanielDG July 19th, 2012, 11:06 AM Very very nice work indeed Daniel, keep it up.
Bill
Thanks Bill!
I glued the fingerboard to the neck today:

Dryclamping.. Making sure where to put which clamp
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-TQGPJJXO.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-TQGPJJXO.jpg)
Glued.
I ended up using two dowels to line up the fretboard. They will disappear once the headstock is thicknessed. Worked really good.
DanielDG July 20th, 2012, 06:42 AM Clamps are off:

DanielDG July 20th, 2012, 12:45 PM Holy crap; excellent work. I want to build one of these one day. Probably should finish my first guitar though...
Lovely work.
Thanks guys! I really appreciate it.
I did some more work today:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-TUBBKT3V.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-TUBBKT3V.jpg)
Installed the sidedots
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-BRDIWZWW.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-BRDIWZWW.jpg)
And thinned the headstock + worked on the fretboard-headstock transition.
Next: drilling holes for the neck mounting screws + fretting
DanielDG July 21st, 2012, 03:16 PM I fretted the fingerboard today and also bolted the neck to the body for the first time:twisted:: But I had to make a new fretbender to prebend the fretwire to a 9,5" radius:

I'm gonna finish the neck profile and position the bridge and PU's etc.
glen smith July 21st, 2012, 03:27 PM Nice progress, it is starting to take shape.
Canadianbreed July 21st, 2012, 04:03 PM If anyone is interested here is a very sweet bender and the price is amazing.

Daniel, the blonde guitar sitting in the black rack in front of all that other light wood in your room looks like a piece of art. Love it. Beautiful job on the inlay.
I am going to build a Fender bass someday, still deciding if it will be a P bass or J bass. Your thread here is very inspiring. Keep up the great work.

Nice bender! I'm gonna got me a similare one one day. My crude system isn't very friendly for my fingers, LOL.

Thank you! Personally, I really prefer a J-bass. The body shape is more 'flowing' than the P-bass. Ofcourse you could always build both of them, problem solved..
I shaped the neck today:

Time to rout the electronics+pu cavities..
DanielDG July 25th, 2012, 01:21 PM I routed the PU cavities today:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-LB6T7PKT.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-LB6T7PKT.jpg)
On this pic you can see the 'double fit'-rout: you can either install a J-bass PU or a P-bass PU. The pickguard covers the remaining cavity.

DanielDG July 31st, 2012, 03:53 PM Woodwork is almost finished!
I drilled the holes for the groundwire and electronic wires. I also made the pickguard template and cut the pickguard:

http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-ITIM7GJR.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-ITIM7GJR.jpg)
I also routed a cavity to adjust the trussrod:
http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-KE7PJLJJ.jpg (http://www.mijnalbum.nl/GroteFoto-KE7PJLJJ.jpg)
Next: drilling the tunerholes + strapbutton holes and stringing her up! After that it's time for lacquer..
DanielDG August 12th, 2012, 09:01 AM And a small update! I made the groove for the trussrod adjustment longer.
I also started the finishing process. I first did the final sanding up to 320grit and applied the lacquer. No pore filling for this alder!

I still have to touchup two tiny spots on the body, but my rattlecan's empty. The store I got it from (it's NC lacquer from Manchester guitar tech, but I get mine in France) is currently closed due to holidays. They're open again the 20th of August, so I will continue working on the body around that time.
In the meanwhile, I'll finish the neck! More on that soon.
Daniel

DanielDG August 15th, 2012, 04:08 AM Coming along nicely. Can you tell me the depth of the neck route?
Thanks! I used the dimensions from the plan. These aren't standard though:
Neck pocket depth: 11/16"
Total neck thickness: 17/16"
Fretboard thickness: 1/4"
Neck heel thickness: 13/16"
GerryB August 15th, 2012, 08:24 AM Clean work. Can you tell me the length of the fingerboard from the nut to the heel?
DanielDG August 15th, 2012, 01:53 PM Clean work. Can you tell me the length of the fingerboard from the nut to the heel?
Thank you!
Length: 23.892"
(I used StewMacs calculator to do this, but this also what I measured)
GerryB August 17th, 2012, 02:58 PM Thank you kindly!
soulman969 August 17th, 2012, 03:12 PM Daniel you do absolutely incredible work! That bass is gonna be beautiful and I'm a pretty fair judge of Jazz Basses since I've been playing them for 35+ years. The photo journal is great. Just a few more days until it's 100% finished huh? Can't wait to see it then. Thanks for sharing this with us.
DanielDG August 18th, 2012, 02:45 PM Thank you kindly!

Finishing etc. will be done by the last weekend of August. Bass will be fully finished the last weekend of september, since the lacquer has to cure.
So I started finishing the neck.
First thing I did was to reshape and reprofile it.. I really wasn't happy with how it was feeling and looking so I took care of that first. That being done, the finishing could begin.

glen smith August 22nd, 2012, 03:12 PM The neck looks great! I have a pdf file for the Jazz Bass but the body thickness is not specified. Could you give me that info please, or perhaps post your pdf file?

And:
I'm going to guess... 1.75"?
=> Correct!:mrgreen:
glen smith August 22nd, 2012, 03:49 PM Well, I could have guessed at it too but Preeb documented a P-Bass build and it was 1 & 5/8" thick so I wanted to be sure.
Bentley August 22nd, 2012, 05:32 PM Unless you want a vintage spec build, I honestly don't think it matters. Just make sure push/pull pots will fit it you're using them.
Erwin August 22nd, 2012, 06:16 PM Hey Daniel,
